To help clarify things, we’ve answered all your burning questions below.

The 2024 Twisters movie is considered a standalone sequel to Twister, which means it’s not a remake but it’s also not a continuation of the original story.

The two films share the same premise and are set in the same world, but there are no character overlaps.

In saying that though, there are some nods to the original Twister movie from 1996.

James Paxton, the son of Bill Paxton who portrayed Bill Harding in the ‘90s film, makes a cameo in tribute to his late father, and the Dorothy tracking device also makes a return. 

Lee Isaac Chung, the director of Twisters 2024, has explained the connection between Twisters and Twister, calling the latest flick a “new chapter” in the story.

“I see it as a new science experiment. [It’s the] same world. We don’t have the same characters but it’s a new experiment,” Chung told the Inside Total Film podcast.

“There are a lot of nods to the original. But I hope I’ve made it its own thing as well. That’s what I found invigorating about making this movie – the chance to do something new with that first story that I really loved, to do a new chapter, if you will.”

Although there were early plans to have Helen Hunt reprise her role as a meteorologist Jo, as well as ideas about following the life of her and Bill’s daughter, the studio ultimately decided to go with a fresh story set in the same world.

The newest iteration features a fresh group of storm chasers (Daisy Edgar Jones and Glen Powell) who encounter a convergence of multiple weather systems over central Oklahoma. Twisters also incorporates the effects of climate change into the plot.

Meanwhile, the original focuses on two storm chasers (Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt), who are on the brink of divorce, putting themselves in the middle of a dangerous tornado in an attempt to create a new advanced weather alert system.

Another connection between the original Twister film and Twisters 2024 are the filming locations. Both movies were filmed across a variety of locations in Oklahoma.

Twister was filmed in towns Oklahoma City, Fairfax, Ralston, Maysville and Stillwater, while Twisters was also filmed in Oklahoma City in addition to Chickasha, Okarche, El Reno, Spencer and Cashion.

As the two films are chronologically linked, you technically don’t need to watch Twister before seeing Twisters.

In saying that though, it is super nostalgic to look back at the original before seeing the new story unfold.

And motherhood has been no exception for the star.

It hasn’t always been easy however, as Sonia struggled to fall pregnant to partner Craig McPherson.

While Craig had six children from a previous relationship, Sonia longed to be a mother herself.

Being over the age of 45, doctors told Sonia her chances of falling pregnant were zero, and the couple’s attempts to conceive both naturally and through IVF were unsuccessful.

“We tried IVF and it wasn’t successful,” she told The Australian Womens Weekly in 2012.

“The doctors were very clear with me too, that for women over the age of 45, which was the age we attempted IVF, the success rate is zero.

“You still believe it can happen, and you see stories, and you think maybe that can happen for us, but the odds are definitely very slim.”

Luckily for Sonia, at the age of 49, a close friend donated an egg and the TV host fell pregnant. Nine months later, she gave birth to her daughter Maggie.

“It has been a long road, but Craig and I are delighted to finally confirm we are having a baby,” she told the Herald Sun when announcing her pregnancy.

Just a year later, Sonia told The Australian Women’s Weekly she would love to have a second child, but is hesitant.

“It’s been such a joy for me, I’m just so happy,” she said of motherhood. “I would love to [have another child] but, I really feel like I shouldn’t push my luck!”

Sonia is content with her gorgeous daughter Maggie and their bond only seems to be getting stronger.

“Luckily for me, she’s pretty measured actually. She’s seven now, so she’s kind of grown out of that phase,” Sonia told Now To Love in July 2022.

“They really do start to mature a little bit when they go to school and we have the best time just hanging out together.”

She also revealed that Maggie is developing an interest in her mum’s glam job – or at least the beauty side of it.

“Little girls, they start to gravitate towards makeup at quite a young age, but I keep saying to her, ‘you don’t need anything, your skin is perfect’,” the doting mum says.

What palliative care services are available? Spotlight on DARD

Palliative Care Victoria’s groundbreaking “Dignified and Respectful Decisions (DARD)” initiative provides free, invaluable resources to help carers navigate complex care decisions on behalf of loved ones who can no longer make decisions for themselves. Funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing and the Victorian Government Department of Health, the free resources inform and support families and substitute decision makers.

Carers can also gain clarity around the various care plans available, understand how to work with aged cared teams and access wellbeing support articles. There’s also a glossary which includes medical terminology, helpful definitions about advance care planning and directives, end-of-life care terms and other relevant information. These free resources also provide support for carers in their own lives, with detailed self-care and wellbeing strategies to ensure they can continue caring while looking after themselves both now and in the future.

Practical advice on carers self-care

Self-care for carers might seem contradictory, but DARD aims to transform the carer’s experience. The initiative’s free resources are designed to help carers anticipate future challenges and implement effective strategies to support them through this often-challenging journey.

One supportive hint involves building a network of trusted family members or close friends who can assist with some of the caregiving tasks. There are also smart strategies available to help think through various immediate and long-term decisions that need to be made.

Another beneficial tactic that DARD sets out, is to set aside some time each week for activities that feed your soul. Things to do

Pruning plants can be done now, however it’s all about the timing. Ideally this should only be done at a time when newer buds won’t be impacted by frost, so if your area is prone to late frosts hold off for a month or so.

If heavy frost sets in you can still prune wisteria (take them back to just above nice fuller buds), crepe myrtles (if you’re keeping them smaller) and grape vines. Sasanqua camellias will benefit from a light haircut if they’ve finished flowering and you can also start pruning roses (we’ll have more details on rose pruning in August).

Try and avoid pruning any spring-flowering plants, spring-flowering fruit trees and deciduous shrubs, aside from removing any dead or damaged branches.

What to plant

Now is the perfect time to plant any deciduous trees, from spring-flowering fruit trees to maple trees. When planting, cut the branches back by around one third with a sharp pair of secateurs.

Did you know that there are three main groups of camellias that we grow in Australia? The ones coming into flower now are the classic Japonicas. With amazing flowers in a dazzling range of forms and colours, they’ll be popping up in nurseries now.

If you are looking for some wonderful, old-fashioned, larger, annual colour, then look out for ‘Russell’ lupins (Lupinus polyphyllus cultivars) as seedlings or advanced potted-colour plants. Lupins have tall, cylindrical flower spikes covered from top to bottom in masses of small blooms. They do have rather sensitive roots so take care to not disturb the root ball when planting.

The Vegie Patch

It’s very much the season of ‘steady as you go’ in the vegie patch right now. If you’re keen on growing, rhubarb crowns are available for planting, and if you’re in the sub-tropics or warmer then yes, it’s tomato time! Other vegetables to plant include:

• Onions
• Peas
• Shallots
• Silverbeet
• English spinach (true spinach)
• Broad beans
• Cabbage
• Winter lettuce varieties.

Flowering now

Although we associate them with spring blossoms, a number of flowering fruit trees – apricot, quince and peach – will come into bloom. In full flower surrounded by a carpet of fallen petals they are truly gorgeous things.

In coastal and other warm areas some of the deciduous magnolias (mostly Magnolia x soulangeana varieties) will show their first blooms. This means they’ll be available to buy in your local nursery too. Deep magenta varieties such as ‘Vulcan’ will add serious wow to your winter garden.

Proteas are often mistaken for Aussie natives, such as banksias and waratahs, and they are in fact from the same family. Proteas hail mainly from South Africa and are reaching their flowing peak now. They’re very robust and reliable, producing masses of flowers once established, however they do need extremely good drainage.

Clivias (Clivia miniata cultivars), another South African native, are just starting to bloom now too. Most often with salmon-coloured flowers, they are available in vibrant oranges, rarer reds, cream and even very collectable green shades and ‘painted’ pastels. They form a low clump with handsome, long, deep green tropical-look foliage and they are a shade lover. That combo of characteristics is their super power – in the depths of winter they bring gorgeous splashes of colour to shady spots in the garden. For something super collectable look out for the varieties with variegated foliage.

Winter is also prime flowering time for many of our natives, especially grevilleas and banksias. Apart from looking fabulous, they give us an abundance of food for birds and other wildlife.

Bring some welcome colour with these two varieties you’ll currently find in garden centres!

Grevillia ‘Flaming Red’

An abundance of intense red flowers on a neat shaped small to medium shrub. Its lengthy flowering period (autumn, winter and into spring) adds a pop of colour when you need it most. It’s reasonably compact, so is good for pots too. Local wildlife and pollinators will love you for adding this to the yard!

Hellebore ‘Vibey Velvet’

Hellebores (often called the winter rose) feature stunning magenta-red blooms from winter into spring, and they make for great cut flowers as well. Their marbled foliage provides extra visual texture in shady spots. All this on a compact plant that only reaches about 50cm tall and wide. For info visit pma.com.au

The door of the warehouse I worked at opened, and I looked up. Seeing a man walking in, I gasped.

Half his face was missing!

I rubbed my eyes, thinking I was imagining things, but his appearance remained the same.

He must’ve been in some sort of accident, I thought sympathetically, trying not to stare.

In the following days at my job as a packager, I found out his name was Joseph.

He seemed friendly enough, but I was too nervous to speak to him, in case I said the wrong thing.

But, one day, I was having trouble working one of the machines at my workstation, and he came over.  

Using a type to voice converter on his phone, he asked if I needed a hand.

“If you don’t mind,” I said, smiling.

Unfortunately, he couldn’t fix it.

“It’s probably best to move to another station,” he said.

I went to grab my stuff, but he stopped me.

“Allow me,” he said, scooping it up.

What a gentleman, I thought.

We started chatting regularly after that.

Every day, Joesph, 41, would bring me a drink, and he’d make me laugh until my sides hurt. I loved his sense of humour!

We spoke about serious things, too.

He told me he wasn’t long out of a 10-year relationship.

“It was on and off,” he said.

“I’ve been in some bad relationships, too,” I told him.

I never asked Joseph about his face, but one day he brought it up.

“I was born with a condition called Otofacial syndrome,” he said “So, I was born without a jaw or chin.”

He told me that when he was two days old, he was given multiple surgeries, including a bone and skin graft, as doctors tried to construct a jaw for him, but as he grew, his body rejected it.

His birth mum then put him up for adoption and although he was taken in by a loving family, he’d dealt with judgement from others all his life.

“I’m sorry you’ve had to go through that,” I said.

Over time, I found myself becoming drawn to Joseph, but my feelings confused me.

So, when he asked me on a date to a comedy club, I didn’t go.  

I wasn’t ready to be in a relationship and worried what people would think, but as much as I tried to push aside my feelings for Joseph, I couldn’t.

When he asked me out again on Valentine’s Day, I said yes. We went dancing and had so much fun.

“I’m glad I came,” I told him.

We continued dating after that.

We’d go to places neither of us had been before and do activities we’d never done.

We also went to a lot of restaurants, even though Joseph couldn’t eat anything. He could have solids but they had to be blended, as he ate through a tube in his stomach.

“I just want you to be happy,” he told me when we dined out.

In time, I introduced him to a few of my family and friends.

Most were shocked but they soon realised how happy Joseph made me.

My mum, Janice, worried I’d have to spend my life looking after him.

But once she realised Joseph was fiercely independent and wanted to look after me, she fell in love with him, just as I had.

Then, in 2020, a year into our relationship, Joseph and I started discussing marriage. It was something we both wanted.

There was no big proposal or ring. We just decided one day to go and get a marriage licence.

While we were there, the lady issuing it had a question for us.

“Do you want to get married today?” she asked.

My heart leapt in my chest. It felt wild and spontaneous, but something made us say yes!

We wouldn’t have been allowed a big do during the pandemic anyway.

So, in front of strangers and casually dressed, we said, “I do”.

We moved in together afterwards.

I’d lived with my mum before and when I told her I was married, she was shocked.

“You two are crazy,” she said. 

“Maybe,” I laughed. “But we’re in love.”

Often, when we’re out in public, people will point and stare.

Sometimes they even take pictures.

We try to ignore them but occasionally Joseph will confront them and call them out on their ignorance.

We’d rather people come up and ask us questions and try to understand.

Joseph knows he looks different, but he’s still a person with a heart, feelings and a brain.

He should be treated with respect, just like anyone else.

I don’t even see his disability anymore.

Sometimes when I’m making a drink, I’ll automatically make him one and put it in front of him.

When I realise he can’t sip it, we both burst out laughing and Joseph pretends to toss it back.

His ability to stay positive is one of the many things I love about him.

When we can afford to, we’re going to renew our vows and finally have the big white wedding we’ve never had.

I want the whole fairytale, as that’s what marrying Joseph is to me.

We’ve spoken about children, but now we’re both older, we’re more drawn to the idea of adoption.

It would mean a lot to Joseph to give a child, who’s in a similar situation to him, a loving home.  

It would mean the world to me too.

Whatever path we decide to take, we’ll take it together.

Our love for each other is eternal, no matter what others say.

I was attracted to Vania from the first time I saw her, but I thought she was too pretty for me. I was just happy with being around her and us being friends. But over time, feelings developed on her side, too, and she started to see that I was a good, honest man and I’d always be there for her and protect her.

The proud family man has been married since 1995, but Larry says his wife is his “pillar of strength”.

“I’m sure anyone else would have walked out a thousand times because I’ve been through some pretty terrible times in my job, and I’ve never been able to say to my family, ‘Yes, I guarantee I can feed you or pay the mortgage.’ She’s just been so strong. I adore her,” he gushed to TV WEEK in 2021.

“We spend so much time together. We love each other dearly, desperately. She’s away now for a couple of days, and I can’t sleep. It’s so sad! I’m like a little baby. She’s everything to me.”

Whilst his son Jye works in real estate, while Larry’s daughter Tia has embarked on a career in media just like her dad. During the early days of COVID, she worked at Channel Seven in news but though she didn’t start until after Larry left, he did consider staying back.

“Sometimes I was tempted to just walk past her at the door, wearing a mask, so I could see her,” he said.

“There’s a thing now, Jye was telling me, when their friends are going out on a bender, they call it a ‘Larry Emdur’, so I’ve made it!”

That’s why, on a 35-degree day, we’ve joined a long queue at famous food joint Franklin Barbecue to get our hands on their brisket.

Shuffling slowly towards the door, we can see people coming out with trays of meat, coleslaw and potato salad, and it looks delicious.

Finally it’s our turn and the food does not disappoint – the brisket is cooked for hours in the restaurant’s smoker, it falls apart as you touch it and tastes amazing.

We add a pork rib and some turkey to the mix (well, we had to try it, right?) and all of it was sublime.

Stuffed full, we step back out into the heat to head towards some more of the Austin landmarks – although we’re taking them in from the comfort of a bus with Austin Detours’ The Real Austin tour.

Our driver takes us to the imposing pink granite Texas Capitol building, and we head inside to see the impressive and historic place for ourselves.

A drive around some other hotspots – including the famous Greetings From Austin mural, food trucks and well-known stores – gives us a great overview of the city and introduces us to yet another Austin must-see – the bats!

Every summer night at sundown, thousands of bats fly out from under the Congress Avenue Bridge, and tourists flock to see the spectacle – it’s certainly impressive!

Back to food and it’s time for dinner. We hit up Kemuri Tatsu-Ya – a restaurant we had seen on Netflix’s Somebody Feed Phil.

A fusion of barbecue and Japanese cuisine, this place is well worth a visit, with the brisket and gouda stuffed tofu pockets a real highlight.

Once again full to the brim, we hop on some electric scooters to ride to our next famous Austin landmark – The White Horse Honky Tonk bar in East Austin.

Austin is a music town, and this place is the real deal, filled with couples doing the Texas Two Step to live music. It’s great fun, and if you’re feeling brave enough, you can head out on to the dance floor, too!

If you’re not done after a boogie here, head to 6th Street. This is where you’ll find more bars, clubs and restaurants, and music playing every night.

Another favourite is the fun Rainey Street, where houses have been turned into bars and a host of food trucks feed the partiers. Both places will have you out ’til late!

Of course, there is far more to the city of Austin than just booze and barbecue, so we also make sure to head to Blanton Museum of Art.

This impressive museum houses the famous art and architecture work ‘Austin’ by Ellsworth Kelly, and is great to get to if you’re in the area. An afternoon spent here is a nice way to beat the heat, and see a different side to the town the locals want to “stay weird”.

An Uber ride to the super cool shopping district of South Congress, including the famous Allens Boots store where we try on a load of boots, tops off the day.

Wandering through boutiques and trying on Stetsons is fun, and there are plenty of food stops and bars should you get tired.

While famous for its barbecue and bats, adding great shopping, music and art to the mix means that Austin, in fact, has something for everyone.

Where to stay

The Loren at Lady Bird Lake is the perfect place to rest when you’re in Austin. It’s across the lake from the city, so you get great views of the skyline AND you’re a little removed from the action.

This luxe hotel also has a fitness centre with a yoga studio, and rooftop pool – great for when the temperature rises and that Texan sun hits hard.

We had a king room complete with a great view over the trees to the water, and the most comfortable bed we have ever slept in!

The restaurant Nido is well worth a visit too – combining Texan cuisine with fine dining and really, really good cocktails.

A walk (or ride) across the bridge and you’re firmly in the action of downtown Austin, plus you’re also close to the water if you’re keen on paddle boarding (or a swim in Barton Springs pool).

The answer is yes. Uluru actually the perfect place to travel with family of all ages. Here’s why…

It’s easy…

Getting around at Uluru is super simple. As soon as you arrive at Ayers Rock airport, there is a bus waiting to whisk you away to the wonderful Ayers Rock Resort, and buses can drive you to most attractions and events, which makes everything super convenient for all ages.

The bus drops you right outside the hotel, so there’s no need to walk too far or struggle with luggage. The Resort also has a range of accommodation to suit all needs. We opted for rooms at the Desert Gardens Hotel, and the ground floor rooms were easily accessible, comfortable and had outdoor areas where we could relax.

Plus, the resort shuttle runs every 20 minutes and means that you never have to walk too far – hop on for a brief trip to the town square, where you can buy souvenirs and art works, plus any other must-haves in the handy IGA.

Another plus? The resort can also book your tours and activities for you, so everything is super easy and well-organised.

It’s all about connection to Country

Seeing Uluru up close is such an amazing and moving experience – we headed to the Cultural Centre, where we learned some of the history of the area and a little about Tjukurpa – the traditional law and creation stories of Anangu, the traditional owners.

Next we did the short Kuniya Walk to Mutitjulu Waterhole – a lush and shady area with a lot of cultural significance to Anangu. This was such a breathtaking place to visit – we were shown fascinating rock art and heard about Kuniya the woma python woman.

Both of us loved hearing these incredible stories and felt privileged to have been welcomed there.

There’s so much to see and do

We were super excited for the Wintjuri Wiru drone show over Uluru. As night approached, we hopped on a bus from our hotel for the short drive to the Wintjuri Wiru site.

Cocktails and canapes were waiting as we made the short walk along a well-lit and easy to navigate boardwalk, then as dusk settled we moved down to bleacher style seating, with our own gourmet picnic hamper filled with delicious food, native flavours at the fore. 

As it got colder, mum was able to wrap up with the complimentary blankets – and we sat in awe as the drone show began, telling the Mala story of Anangu in lights, lasers, music and video.

It was truly amazing storytelling, spine-tinglingly emotional and well worth the money. I would say it’s a must-see if you’re visiting Uluru.

The next day we enjoyed some of the free activities at the resort – starting with an easy guided garden walk.

Our guide highlighted some of the local flora, bush foods and more on a short walk around the grounds, and it was fascinating.

Another free activity was The Gallery of Central Australia (GoCA) tour – where we learned about the paintings in the gallery as well as what each symbol means in the indigenous artworks on display.

The sky’s the limit…

Dinner on our second night was at Sails in the Desert hotel – this buffet style food fest is great if you want a taste of everything.

Mum and I loaded up on Indian dishes and delicious seafood before we headed to our next destination- the Field Of Light.

This major artwork by Bruce Monro covers more than seven football fields, has 50,000 spindles of light in different colours, and is accessible to most – though be aware you do have to walk in darkness some of the time.

We booked General Admission tickets ($48 each) and again hopped on the bus to take us there. We walked around in awe, while also looking up at the sky where we could see stars that stretched on forever – the effect of both is breathtaking.

Mum particularly loved the night sky here – we spotted the Milky Way and several constellations we knew as we gazed across this astonishing installation.

Uluru really is somewhere every Australian should try to experience – regardless of age!

The great thing is that you can be as active or as relaxed as you like — you can take the bus like we did, or you can hike, bike, ride camels and more.

The bottom line is that the Anangu really want you to get the most of your visit and to connect to Country and their culture – and that is something anyone can do, from 8 to 80 and beyond!

As someone who’s lived in Sydney for most of their life, I’ve been to the Central Coast several times but admittedly haven’t spend much time there as an adult. So, I was excited to go away with Destination Central Coast recently and reacquaint myself with this special pocket of New South Wales over a wintry weekend.

If you’ve been craving a moment away from home, read on for our tips of where to stay, where to eat and what to do in the Central Coast for a low stakes, easy-to-organise winter getaway.

Where to stay in Central Coast

We stayed at the Quarters Forrester Beach which is primely positioned for exploring the best beaches and attractions on the Central Coast – and would be perfect accommodation for smaller families or a lowkey couple getaway. Each of the 34 Hamptons-inspired rooms feature soft and inviting interiors, and views of the tropical gardens and resort-style pool. It’s worth noting that I had one of the best sleeps of this year in the cloud-like double bed.

Where to eat in Central Coast

When it comes to dining on the Central Coast, you’re irrevocably spoilt rotten for choice. These are a few of the haunts we refuelled at:

For rooftop beach views and cruisy vibes: Head to the Caribbean-inspired Mumbo Jumbo’s in Terrigal offering a Jamaican-influenced menu, eclectic interiors and live bands and DJ sets. Would highly recommend the fish tacos paired with a Piña colada.

For a relaxed bite right on the water: Check out Drifter’s Wharf on the cove of Brisbane Water that offers elevated pub food in its boathouse-esque haunt and champions live music and entertainment.

For modern Australian fine dining: Arc Est. in Terrigal offers a casual take on fine dining with its buzzy setting and thoughtful menu. I will note…the tuna sashimi followed by a prawn hotpot has been my favourite meal of the year thus far.

What to do in the Central Coast in winter

While surfing and hiking around the Central Coast make for great holidaying activities any time of year, there’s no denying that these activities particularly shine in the summertime. Our wintry weekend away also happened to be a very rainy weekend away.

So, in between reading, pottering about, and checking out the local culinary offerings, we braved the weather with a walk around Wamberal Lagoon (nearby to Forresters Beach), stopped for coffee and a stroll around Avoca Beach, and participated in a fantastic cocktail making class at Distillery Botanica – the home of the IWSC Gold-winning Moore’s Dry Gin. (I would also highly recommend the exclusive guided tour with esteemed herbalist Master Distiller Phillip Moore who is perhaps one of the most knowledgeable and passionate people about distilling with botanicals you’ll ever meet.)

Plus, below is a few other activities to inspire the itinerary of your Central Coast weekend away:

• Distil your own gin at Distillery Botanica
• Take a tour of an oyster farm – an ideal activity for the foodie and epicurean
• Abseil in Glenworth Valley – perfect for the adventurer
• Engage with Aboriginal storytelling in a workshop and wine tasting at Firescreek Botanical Winery

Now you’re all equipped with the where and what of the Central Coast in the winter, all that’s left to do is to carve out a weekend in the calendar!

He has no doubt earned his title as one of the more versatile actors in Hollywood – from dodging the vicious jaws of extinct dinosaurs to taking his wits to the court room in his latest Binge drama The Twelve.

But outside of his brilliant career, what do we know about the Kiwi actor?

Sam Neill doesn’t particularly seem interested in the flashing lights that Hollywood has to offer and so maintains a relatively private family life.

The 76-year-old grabbed the attention of his first wife, fellow New Zealand actress Lisa Harrow on the set of 1981 film Omen III. The pair wed in 1981 and were together for roughly 11 years before their unfortunate divorce in 1989.

Sam and Lisa did, however, share a son, Tim Neill born in 1983.

In 1993, Sam exchanged vows for a second time with Japanese film make-up artist Noriko Watanabe.

“We met on Dead Calm. It was on an island with plenty of time on our hands, so I leapt out in pursuit of her,” Sam told The Guardian in 2006. “I met with tremendous resistance for a long time. I got there in the end with dogged persistence.”

Together, they welcomed a daughter Elena in January 1991. In her younger years, Elena starred in some projects including Top of the Lake (2013) and The Brush-off (2004), according to IMDb.

But in 2023, Sam revealed to The Sydney Morning Herald that Elena was a tattoo artist based in Melbourne, Australia.

During his marriage to Noriko, Sam also adopted her daughter, Maiko.

Sam and Noriko were married for nearly 30 years until their divorce in 2017.
