If you’re on the hunt for a new form of exercise that gets you in shape, is enjoyable, and challenges your body but isn’t too high an impact on joints and muscles – then Pilates is the answer!

Pilates has absolutely taken the world, and particularly Australia, by storm. It’s a favourite of celebrities, models and athletes alike and now it has never been easier to try for yourself.

“Pilates is not the new kid on the block, but has definitely surged in popularity the last few years,” says Brianna Law, product manager for Rebalance Pilates & Yoga.

“Since the global pandemic, many people have been searching for at-home workouts that don’t necessarily require equipment, and Pilates is a solution, offering a versatile workout that can be taken anywhere.”

In fact, Pilates has been around since the early 1920s, introduced by German trainer Joseph Pilates, and was created by combining aspects of Yoga, martial arts, gymnastics, and dance.

But if you want to try your hand at Pilates, you may want to invest in a pair of special grip socks to prevent slipping and injuries.

“When purchasing grip socks, find a pair that fits well. If they are too tight they can be uncomfortable, but too loose and they won’t provide appropriate traction. I’d also recommend materials such as cotton or bamboo which are moisture-wicking and breathable.

“Aside from that, find a pair that you find aesthetically pleasing to encourage you to wear them every time you step into the studio,” says Brianna.

What is Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates is a form of exercise that uses a machine called the ‘reformer’ that essentially looks like a bed frame but with a series of straps and pulleys to create resistance in your movements, thus allowing the use of different muscles whilst you exercise.

We spoke to Emma Stallworthy, the founder of Your Reformer – a platform that allows you to rent or buy your very own reformer machine for home – to discuss the benefits of Reformer Pilates.

“Reformer Pilates has traditionally been known for rehabilitation or for elite dancers. In the past few years as more studios have opened with mainstream fitness style classes, its popularity has grown exponentially,” she says.

“If you’ve tried a class, it’s easy to see why – so much variety in the movements and repertoire, so adaptable for different bodies, ages and fitness levels, it’s low impact so can be used as a daily movement, and it changes our body shapes like no other exercise I’ve known. The self-confidence and empowerment are second to none.”

What are the benefits of Pilates?

There are endless benefits to Pilates, both physical and mental.

 • Core strength and stability: Pilates has a major focus on core strength, and many of the movements in classes and workouts target the abdominal muscles and strengthen the area. This leads to improvements in posture and general stability.
 • Increased flexibility: as much of Pilates includes stretching of the muscles, practisers will notice better flexibility as a result and general improvement of movement.
 • Stress relief: Pilates incorporates deep breathing and mindful focus and can help to destress and relax the mind.

Pilates is also a great workout for mature age women, as it is low impact it doesn’t put as much pressure on joints which can cause injuries.

“Pilates offers an incredible low-impact approach to strengthening the body, with a particular focus on balance and stability. Pilates apparatus such as the reformer or Cadillac, are phenomenal tools to help adapt exercises seen in the mat Pilates repertoire by offering a plethora of exercises to decrease load and offer support for the body,” says Brianna Law.

The great thing about Pilates is that there are many ways to adapt exercises to better suit the participants’ needs and strengths, as well as focusing on movements that can strengthen weaker areas and reduce everyday strain or pain.

“Pilates is just as much about lengthening as it is strengthening, and this is what the spine in particular craves as we age. The box is a great option for arm exercises that others may do kneeling but that position can be more difficult as we age, so it’s inclusive in that way,” adds Emma.

“Weight-bearing can also be challenging with weakened wrists so there are plenty of alternatives for body strength that don’t require the same amount of weight, simply by using springs to be more supportive for example.”

The post Stay on track with your fitness goals thanks to the most affordable smartwatches appeared first on Now To Love.

]]>
Whether you fancy an early morning jog every day or consider yourself a well-established gym member, you may be on the hunt for a smartwatch.

Of course, smartwatches aren’t just limited to the fitness folk either – the Apple Watch is a fashion statement after all – but rather appeal to almost everyone.

However tempting, though, a smartwatch does come with a hefty price tag, especially a high-grade option that is packed with must-have features to help you track your fitness.

This is why we turn our attention to the more affordable choices, ones that do the job without the dent in the wallet so we can wear them with peace of mind.

Is a cheap smartwatch worth it?

Opting for an affordable smartwatch comes with its pros and cons. For starters, smartwatches on the cheaper side can be a good option for those on a budget or new to smartwatches.

They’re cost-effective, offering basic features like step tracking, heart rate monitoring, and notifications, making them ideal for first-time users, kids, or anyone who just needs the essentials.

However, cheaper smartwatches are often made with lower-quality materials, making them less durable, and they may lack advanced features like GPS, NFC for payments, or high-quality displays.

Therefore affordable smartwatches are better suited for casual use, basic fitness tracking, and as an introduction to smartwatches.

For more than three decades, Richard Simmons was America’s favourite exercise guru.

Clad in hot pants and bedazzled talk tops, his upbeat and inclusive approach to fitness saw him star in infomercials, publish cookbooks and make regular appearances on television.

His 1998 fitness video Sweatin to the Oldies was a record-breaking success. It grossed over $200 million in sales.

EXERCISE THE RIGHT TO PRIVACY

But in 2014, the flamboyant fitness guru mysteriously vanished overnight from the public eye, sending fans into a worried frenzy.

Speculation ran wild with claims he was being held captive by his housekeeper, that he’d had gender affirmation surgery, was terminally ill or had gained so much weight he was physically incapacitated.

This inspired the hit 2017 podcast Missing Richard Simmons made by one of his former fitness class attendees, which attempted to solve the puzzle.

Finally, Richard responded by issuing a statement on Facebook saying, “I’m not ‘missing’, just a little under the weather”.

Earlier this year when it was announced that American comedian Pauly Shore was set to play him in a new biopic, Richard swiftly responded saying that he hadn’t given permission for the production.

The now 75-year-old recently surprised fans. He announced that he’s working on an interactive Broadway show about his life and appears to be back in the public eye.

“I am so excited,” he wrote “I have so many ideas and I’m writing them all down… Broadway is in my blood!”

‘YOU GOTTA MOVE!’

Australian born fitness and diet guru Susan Powter was a mid-nineties self-help sensation telling fans, “You gotta eat! You gotta breathe! You gotta move!” in her infomercials.

With her bleached-blonde crew cut and stiletto heels, Powter raged against the scourge of diets and fat substitutes. She claimed they only set women up for failure.

“Stop the insanity,” she told them. In 1993 alone, Powter sold more than $50 million worth of simplified, common-sense wellness advice. “If you can’t pronounce it,” she told followers, “Don’t eat it.”

However, in 1995, three days before her third book was due to be released, Powter filed for personal bankruptcy. She blamed legal battles with her business partners.

“I am broke,” she said. “I just don’t have any money.”

While Powter largely disappeared from the mainstream media spotlight, she still remains active to her followers through online consultations and private sessions.

‘AEROBICS OZ STYLE’

There were around 4,500 episodes made. (Image: Instagram)

Aerobics Oz Style helped Australia get up and moving every morning with exercise between 1982 to 2000. The beloved Channel Ten show served up upbeat music and funky leotards against the backdrop of iconic local landmarks.

Instructors included June Jones, Jodie Low, Wendi Carroll and others such as Kelly Martinovich.

After joining the show in 1998, Kelly become a standout personality. But when the show’s production ended, she faced personal challenges.

In August 2022, Martyn Williams stormed into the Perth gym he jointly owned with Kelly, carrying a sledgehammer. He angrily yelled at the high-profile fitness instructor.

Kelly had reportedly tried to end their business partnership. But on facing court, Martyn denied threatening anyone. Just weeks later, Kelly’s son Jaden was charged with murder after allegedly stabbing a 17-year-old in the heart during an apparent botched drug deal.

Jaden, 18, pleaded not guilty to murder. He claimed he was defending himself during an alleged carjacking. His next hearing is in August.

EXERCISE AND ‘FEEL THE BURN’

When actress Jane Fonda released her first exercise video sporting a striped leotard and burgundy stirrup leg warmers with her hair fluffed to heaven, she sparked a fitness revolution.

Released on VHS tape in 1982, Jane Fonda’s Workout was an unprecedented success. It launched a fitness series that sold over 17 million copies. “Feel the burn!” and “No pain, no gain” became her catchphrases.

Despite netting millions, the business wasn’t owned by Jane but the organisation she and her then husband Tom Hayden founded to further his political career.

“Tom hated it,” Jane later said of her incredibly successful second career. “Even though all the money went to the organisation. He thought it was all about vanity.”

The couple divorced in 1990 and since then Jane has attributed her dedication to fitness as a crucial part of her recovery from a lifelong eating disorder.

Now 86, Jane has released 22 workout videos.

Yes, home workouts with dumbbells are an effective, efficient way to train. Using heavier weight options as you increase strength will help you create beautiful muscle definition.

Dumbbells are also incredibly versatile and allow you to work different muscle groups. Use them to amp up the burn on any at-home workout, and you’re sure to notice a difference in your overall fitness.

IS IT OK TO WORK OUT WITH DUMBBELLS EVERY DAY?

Unless you are targeting the same muscles every single day, working out with dumbbells on the daily shouldn’t pose a problem. However, it’s important to listen to your body. And, if you have any concerns, consult your healthcare provider.

It’s important to note that working out every day isn’t necessary. For most people, it’s sufficient to have two-to-three weightlifting sessions per week.

CAN YOU BUILD MUSCLE WITH DUMBBELLS ONLY?

Absolutely, yes! Dumbbells rank among the top resistance training tools for both beginners and professional athletes. Their ability to build strength and muscles makes them essential for any fitness routine. And their easy-to-store convenience makes them perfect for at-home gyms.

Does the type of running shoe matter?

First things first, does your sneaker actually matter when it comes to running? According to James Chan, the head of marketing Pacific at renowned global sportswear brand, Reebok, the right shoe can absolutely impact your performance, no matter your expertise level.

“Running shoes can indeed have a positive impact on performance, even for casual or beginner runners. A well-designed running shoe provides essential support, cushioning, and stability that can enhance comfort, reduce the risk of injury, and promote a more efficient running stride,” James told Now To Love.

Important factors in a quality running shoe can include anything from stability to flexibility, cushioning or traction. When it comes down to it, it all depends on the individual runner and their needs.

When it comes to the design of a good running shoe, James advised that “designing running shoes for different types of runners involves considering factors like cushioning level (more for beginners, potentially less for advanced runners), support features, and biomechanical considerations”.

“Biomechanics, including factors like pronation (foot roll), impact forces, and stride length, influence shoe design. Different shoes offer varying levels of pronation control or support, cushioning materials, and flexibility to accommodate different foot strikes and running styles,” he said.

What should you look for when buying running shoes?

According to James, “shoppers should consider factors such as their running style, foot shape, terrain, and desired level of support and cushioning”.

“It’s important to get properly fitted, consider the shoe’s durability, and test the shoes through a short jog or run before making a final decision”, he added.

Is there a difference between a Pilates mat and a yoga mat?

While both Pilates and yoga mats may seem interchangeable at first glance, they are designed with specific practices in mind. Pilates mats are often thicker than yoga mats, offering enhanced cushioning to cushion the spine and joints during exercises.

The added thickness of Pilates mats ensures that the mat can absorb impact and provide optimal support, which is crucial for the controlled and precise movements of Pilates routines.

Whereas yoga mats are thinner and boast a stickier surface. This aids in maintaining balance and stability during yoga’s stationary poses, with their grip preventing any untimely slips.

What is the best thickness for a Pilates mat?

The right thickness of a Pilates mat can greatly impact your comfort and performance during workouts.

Generally, Pilates mats range from 8mm to 15mm in thickness. A mat that’s too thin might not provide enough cushioning for your spine and joints, leading to discomfort or pain during exercises.

On the flip side, a mat that’s too thick might compromise your stability and balance, affecting the precision that Pilates demands.

A recommended thickness for Pilates mats is around 10mm to 12mm. This range strikes a balance between cushioning and stability, allowing for controlled movements while ensuring your body’s comfort. The thicker padding supports your back, hips, and other pressure points, promoting proper alignment and reducing strain.

Is a massage gun better than a vibrating massager?

While both massage guns and vibrating massagers offer benefits for muscle relaxation and relief, they work in slightly different ways.

Massage guns use percussive therapy to target specific muscle groups with rapid bursts of pressure, which can be particularly effective for deep tissue massage and targeting specific areas of tension or pain.

Vibrating massagers, on the other hand, use continuous vibrations to stimulate muscles and promote relaxation, often covering larger muscle groups.

Lesley Maxwell, 66, from Melbourne, Vic, shares her story with Take 5…

Lying in my hospital bed, I was flicking through the channels when I suddenly paused, seeing muscular women in bikinis and high heels strutting on my screen.

Wow, I thought in amazement. They were competing in a body sculpting competition and looked incredible. I longed to be fit and healthy like them.

It was 2004, and I’d been hospitalised with pneumonia and asthma, giving me the kick up the bum I needed to adopt a more healthy lifestyle. Though I’d never been overweight, since the age of 18, I had often fluctuated in size.

I didn’t know how exercise correctly and found it hard to stick to diets, particularly when my three kids – Vanessa, 22, Anthony, 18, and Damien,16, were younger.

But now at 49, it was time for change.

The day after I left the hospital, I joined the gym with one goal: to look like the women I’d seen on TV.

The show had been about a local trainer, so I sought him out and asked him to train me.

Working out improves my mood and my health

“It’s not going to be easy,” he said.

And he was right! The gym was up two flights of stairs, and the first sessions were so hard I could barely walk back down the stairs afterwards.

I worked out for several hours, four days a week, slowly building my strength.

After six months of training, my coach felt I was ready to compete, so I entered my first competition – Masters over 40.

Stood on the stage, my heart nearly leapt from my chest when they announced my name as the winner.

“I can’t believe it,” I said, stunned.

Over the next 14 years, I won 35 titles in sculpting competitions worldwide.

During this time, I decided to use my experience to help other women over 40 achieve their fitness goals.

I signed up to courses online and qualified as a personal trainer.

Slowly, I started to build up clients. Some have different health issues, such as sarcopenia and osteoporosis, others just want to feel good in their clothes.
I build exercise programs to suit each person’s needs.

I took here iirst place in October 2019

Slowly, I started to build up clients. Some have different health issues, such as sarcopenia and osteoporosis, others just want to feel good in their clothes.

I build exercise programs to suit each person’s needs.

Recently, one of my younger clients broke down while we were training.

“I’ve been diagnosed with osteopenia Les,” she told me through tears.

I was positive and encouraging.

“Let’s catch it in its tracks,” I said. “We’ll do weights for at least two hours a week, and it will keep you strong.”

As we age, our health deteriorates.

Women often suffer from bone density issues like osteoporosis and muscle mass weakness after menopause, but this can be avoided with the proper training and diet.

Here I am modelling for a shoot for Boss Fitness

I’ve recently written a book called My Easy Clean Eating Guidelines to help people eat the right food while they train.

Many older women have never been in the gym or picked up a weight.

My advice is to get started as soon as you can and not leave it too late. There are loads of programs online to follow.

I have some on my website www.lesleymaxwell.fitness.

If you don’t want to do it alone, try a beginner’s session with a personal trainer or go with a family member or friend.

There are four lifts that women should learn if they want to avoid health issues – squat, lunge, push and pull.

Teamed with the right diet, they’ll stay healthy and strong longer. It’s never too late to make changes.

Many of us want to start the year off with a new habit, one that involves integrating more fitness in our lives for better physical and mental wellbeing.

But, as the year rolls on, we start to come up with excuses. Don’t let money be one of them! Try these genius ways to stay healthy for less.

Feel fit and fabulous!

(Credit: Getty)

1. Take classes for free

There’s a free beginner class on YouTube for whatever form of exercise you wish to pursue.

Roll out the yoga mat (or a towel on the carpet) and look up Yoga With Adriene – she runs 30-day programs that help it become a habit (she’s also great at encouraging newbies!).

Consider a form of exercise that is new to you, perhaps tai chi or Pilates.

Prefer group classes in real life? Just google “free yoga classes” along with your city or town. For example, a quick search for Sydney reveals outdoor classes galore.

2. Set up a home gym the smart way

While buying brand-spanking new fitness gear might sound appealing to get your home regimen started, you’ll save big bucks by checking what equipment might be available on Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace.

Fit finds for under $20.

3. Spend time walking in nature

It’s right outside and it’s free. All you need is a comfy pair of trainers.

Starting your day off with a delicious bowl of yoghurt and crunchy, whole grain cereal, it may not be as progressive as your co-worker’s grass-fed steak and kale salad, but your body will thank you for it.

It seems as though everyday there is a new fad diet that we ‘must’ try. Whether it’s the latest trend, endorsed by your favourite celeb or involves starving yourself for a day or two, you’d be forgiven for feeling extremely overwhelmed with the enormous amount of choices you have. More than ever, it is important to be sensible and stick to simple diet changes, like introducing more dairy and grains, which has been shown to improve your wellbeing, inside and out.

Keep it simple and stick to what you know. It is no secret that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so it makes sense to begin your morning with something that is well-balanced, by adding cereal with fibre to your yoghurt – modest, yet still the best way to ensure you start your day off right.

We’ve known the benefits of yoghurt for a long time. Its probiotic effects and overall impressive benefits have made it a staple in the diets of the health conscious.

Probiotic literally means ‘for life’ and is a friendly bacteria that positively effects our digestive system. Yoghurt, which is rich in probiotics, improves the balance of flora in our gut and is a great way to balance the bacteria in the bowel.

Many of us begin our day with yoghurt, but try adding some whole grain cereal to give you the extra nutritious boost your body has been asking for.

Doctors have been telling us for years to eat more fibre, and breakfast cereals are often recommended to help people reach their fibre target. Studies show that whole grain cereals contain a blend of fibres, which help to support digestive health and regularity. People who don’t eat breakfast cereals also find it more difficult to make up their fibre intake across the day.

By filling your breakfast bowl with a blend of crunchy whole grain fibres and your favourite yoghurt, you are creating a match made in a wonderfully healthy heaven. You’ll be ensuring that you’re getting a good balance of dairy and grains, while topping up the protein, calcium and probiotics in yoghurt with the essential nutrients of cereal.

Not only is this combination delicious, it is the best way to maximise your breakfast nutrition and to have a fantastic start to the day.

This nutritious and health-conscious coupling isn’t backed by a celebrity chef, nor is it a well-hidden secret and you probably won’t find it amongst the glossy pages of a new fad diet cookbook.

However, a fibre, whole grain, crunchy cereal, a spoonful or two of a yoghurt rich in probiotics and some fresh fruit is still one of the best combinations for digestive wellbeing.

The best part though – it is cheap, unbelievably easy and satisfyingly delicious.

Next time you’re at the supermarket picking up your favourite tub of yoghurt, don’t forget to grab a box of whole grain, fibre cereal and relish in the digestive benefits your body is about to experience.

She’s dropped 25kg in just three months, but Beyoncé says she regrets the pressure she put on herself to lose her baby weight so fast.

The singer flaunts her slim and sexy body in the April issue of Shape Magazine, showing her dramatic weight loss after the birth of her first child, daughter Blue Ivy, now 14 months old.

The 31-year-old star says that while she was determined to get back her pre-pregnancy figure, she regrets putting herself into the position where she had to “get back in shape quickly”.

“I didn’t have a lot of time to lose the weight because I scheduled a show [in Atlantic City] three months after I gave birth, which I would never do again,” she tells the magazine.

Labelling herself as someone who is “not naturally thin”, Beyoncé reveals, “I am a person that has to work at keeping my body in shape.”

Crediting 80 per cent of her weight loss to cutting back on food, the Grammy Award-winner admits she followed a “very low-calorie diet” and had to give up her favourite food, pasta.

“I stayed away from red meat and ate a lot of fish, replaced pasta and rice with quinoa,” she says.

Although her meal plan was strict, Beyoncé was able to stick to it, with the exception of one cheat day a week.

“I always have breakfast, say, scrambled egg-whites, a vegetable smoothie, or wholegrain cereal with low-fat milk,” she tells.

“For lunch and dinner, I eat a lot of fish and vegetables. And throughout the day, I try to stay hydrated … I always treat myself to one meal on Sundays when I can have whatever I want. Usually it’s pizza, which is my favourite indulgence.”

But a strict diet isn’t the only thing Beyoncé relied on for results. She also burned off the kilojoules with dance workouts.

And despite her own weight loss, Beyoncé stresses that women should embrace their differences rather than place too much emphasis on what the scales show.

“Everyone is not supposed to be the same. Be healthy and take care of yourself, but be happy with the beautiful things that make you you,” she adds.

On my own…

So it seems like everybody and their dog shuts down over the Christmas period including both of my gyms, one closed for two weeks the other on reduced hours making it impossible to make it there after work.

I was a little bit nervous about where to start but when I spoke to Pete he seemed confident that I knew enough to keep up my training on my own for a couple of weeks.

What I absolutely didn’t want to happen was for me to lose progress. I still remember all too well how hard it was at the beginning… my legs wobbling with every squat or lunge.

I decided while I was training on my own I’d make a point to focus on my cardio training since the threat of “conditioning” was still looming in my subconscious. I have this amazing piece of gym equipment from the 1980s that I inherited from my aunt when she upgraded to a treadmill. It’s called a NordicTrak and is basically a cross-country ski machine with wooden skis that you strap your feet into and a pulley system for your arms. It combines resistance and cardio and when I say it make you sweat buckets I’m not exaggerating. I hopped on that every other day for either 30 min or an hour.

I combined that with my old stair training and was happy to see that it still made my legs burn, especially when I just went from running up the stairs to adding 10kgs of free weights. One thing I realized before long was that I’ve completely outgrown all the weights in my little home gym. My 8kg kettle bell that had been collecting dust since I bought it because it was too heavy feels like it barely does a thing now. Who would have thought?

The weeks sped by and I managed to keep to my healthy eating plan despite the holiday temptations. I indulged with a glass of champagne on Christmas Eve and 2 for my Christmas Day lunch. New Years and Boxing Day I volunteered as designated driver. All in all I’d say it was a success. I didn’t lose any weight but for the first time in my adult life I made it through the holidays without putting on an ounce.

On the right track

Just in case I had any doubts about whether to stick with it, it seems like CrossFit is truly taking Hollywood by storm. Miss USA has become a CrossFit addict along with Disney beauty Venessa Hudgens and singer Kelly Clarkson. Clarkson says the workouts make her feel like GI Jane and I totally know what she means. Even the likes of hotties Brad Pitt and Jonathan Statham are getting in on the action to get their bodies ready for film roles. I guess I’m in good company.

Actress Sofía Vergara has arguably one of the hottest bodies in Hollywood, so what’s her secret?

Sofía’s son, Manolo Vergara, who clearly inherited his sense of humour from his mum, has shared his mother’s eating habits with the world by posting a video of her online.

“She eats like a crazy lady,” he reveals in the clip.

Manolo says he decided to make the video, called Sofía Vergara’s secret diet, after receiving a number of emails from her fans about her diet and workout regime.

“My mother has always been very thin and people ask me what does she do? Whenever someone asks me about her workout routine I laugh in their faces!” he said.

This is just one of the videos Manolo has made about his mum’s life in the spotlight.

Manolo, who obviously has a fun-loving relationship with his mum, has also posted videos called ‘Sofia Vergara pranked’ and ‘I like Ellen better than my mum’ on his website Mi Vita Von Toty.

Take a look at what Sophie eats and her carefree attitude to food in the video player above.

When any of these rice grains are eaten, the body rapidly converts them to glucose in the blood stream causing a burst of energy followed soon after by an energy slump.

It may fill you up, but before long you’ll feel hungry again, and therein lies the problem — after a rice meal we often want to eat something else soon after.

There are some rice grains that are better however. Basmati, wild rice and sushi rice also referred to as koshikari rice all have a lower GI.

Brown koshikari is particularly good. Available from health food stores, brown koshikari retains the nutrients from the outer husk and having a lower GI, keeps you feeling full for longer. It may take a bit of getting used to as unlike jasmine and other white rice, it’s quite dense and sticky.

Soft drinks and diet drinks have no nutritional value. Diet drinks may even have an adverse effect on the brain and nervous system.

For weight loss you do have to be careful with fresh juice and limit how much you drink and what it’s made of.

Fruit juices, the most popular choice due to their natural sweetness, have almost twice the energy (kilojoules) of fresh vegetable juice, and although it’s natural sugar (fructose) it still equates to energy, which, if you’re not burning it off will convert to fat.

When you consider the average weight loss diet restricts intake to 6,500 kj a day, much of that allowance is consumed in a large juice. The final thing to consider is how a juice stacks up against whole fruit. Nutritionally you get the same nutrients, without the fibre in the juice. But look how much more energy is in the juice. To make a standard 300ml glass you have to use a lot more produce which boosts the energy content up significantly.

The bottom line is while it’s great that you’ve cut out diet drinks, you should enjoy no more than one 300-350ml glass of juice in the morning, drink water and eat whole fresh fruit and veggies for the rest of the day instead.

It’s the most valuable commodity we have in life — both in and out of the body. By drinking sufficient amounts of water each day we maintain a strong immune system, sleep better, eliminate waste efficiently, and are less likely to overeat.

There’s no way out of this — for good health you have to drink water.

Water should have a pleasant nondescript taste so if yours is really unpleasant you might have a problem with poor condition pipes somewhere between the source to your tap.

A solution might be to buy a water filter to filter out any impurities, like rusted metal or chemicals, which may be attributing to the taste.

You could also try adding a few pieces of lemon or oranges and a sprig of mint to a jug of water — it will give it a citrusy twist which is very pleasant.

The Biggest Loser has double the joy, with a new son and a great new body.

Snuggled against his daddy’s bare chest, little Eden Sarnelli sleeps soundly, blissfully unaware of the significance of this cuddle.

Yet for his father Adro this intimate moment marks not only the beginning of his son’s life but, in a sense, the rebirth of his own.

Few will forget the inspiring image of a staggeringly slimmed-down Adro Sarnelli winning last year’s The Biggest Loser. But as he introduces his beloved new baby to Woman’s Day, Adro also exclusively reveals his sensational new body and the extraordinary steps he took to turn himself into the man he always wanted to be.

Eight weeks before baby Eden was born on November 30, Adro checked himself into hospital for the first of two operations that would rid him of the armfuls of sagging skin which were the legacy of his obesity.

“When I came home from The Biggest Loser, I felt cheated,” he says, speaking candidly about the complex emotions which surrounded his massive weight loss.

“All my life as a fat guy I dreamed that if I lost weight, life would be perfect. I lost more than 50 kilos, but my body was just as bad as when I started because my skin sagged so much. The first thing I saw when I looked down were these horrible flapping man boobs. When I washed I had to lift up bits, like the apron hanging from my stomach, to clean underneath.”

With his wife Sam pregnant with their second child, Adro, 27, was determined that he would — quite literally — be a new person by the time his son was born. Within weeks of the show ending he consulted four plastic surgeons and chose Sydney-based Dr Mark Kohout to perform the operations.

Says Adro, “As soon as I’d started losing weight I knew I wasn’t going to be happy with all the wobbly skin. Having it removed was part of the journey, it allowed me to have closure on the obese person I’d always been.”

Initially doctors suggested a tummy tuck and a male breast reduction, called a gynecomastia, but Adro wanted more. “I had really saggy love handles on my back, my thighs were droopy and I had wobbly tuckshop lady arms. It wasn’t a case of wanting it removed, I needed it removed. I wasn’t prepared to have it hanging around as a reminder of how I was — I have a TV program to remind me!”

To recap, Adro won The Biggest Loser title last April when he dropped a staggering 51 kilos from his 136.5kg frame after competing in the Network Ten series. One of seven children from an Italian family, he began stacking on the weight as a child thanks to rich meals and being forbidden from playing sport.

“Even when I went on the show I didn’t think I’d lose the weight,” he admits. “I’d had it drummed into me for years that I had big bones or that I’d got the bad end of the gene pool.”

The Biggest Loser proved that wasn’t the case. However, despite leaving the show with a 32-inch waist and wearing a medium shirt, Adro couldn’t fully appreciate his new fit body.

On October 3 he went into hospital for a circumferential body lift, a tummy tuck, an outer thigh lift and a buttock lift.

Says Adro, “I was feeling nervous but the anaesthetist was brilliant and asked if I’d like something for the nerves. The next thing I knew was I was waking up and it was over.”

Although the operation had taken more than six hours, Adro felt no pain afterwards. Even when the morphine wore off, he says he felt only discomfort.

Back home after four days, he was amazingly mobile and the only sign of the operation was a thin cut all the way round his abdomen with little suture strips over it.

“From the very first second that I could move enough to see it, I was like ‘wow’. To be flat all the way down was a spinout. I run my hand across my abs (abdominal muscles) all the time because it’s not the sort of thing I ever dreamed I’d have.”

Six weeks after the first operation, Adro returned to hospital for the gynecomastia (breast lift) and the removal of skin from his under-arms. Fifteen centimetres of skin weighing 200 grams was removed from each breast and the nipples were removed and then grafted back onto his chest. The operation took three and a half hours and afterwards he had to wear a protective vest.

“There was a chance the nipples wouldn’t take and the doctor had warned me they would be black for three to four weeks, but within five days they were already pink on the edges,” says Adro, who credits his speedy recovery to his general fitness and use of vitamin supplements.

Initially he had to be careful not to lift his three-year-old daughter Odessa, but now with the swelling nearly gone and only a little fluid retention, he’s delighted with what he calls “the new me”.

“I feel brilliant,” he enthuses, stripping off his shirt without a hint of embarrassment. “Before, I would never have taken my shirt off at the beach or the pool, but now I walk around all the time with a bare chest. I now feel finished and I definitely got that closure I was after.”

One thing he wants to impress is that he didn’t have any liposuction or fat removal. “I know some people think I lost a bit of weight then used surgery to finish it off, but that’s not the case. I don’t want anyone to think I cheated.”

While he may yet have a third operation, Adro’s surgery has already totalled $51,000, although he has only had to pay $25,000 because of the promotional benefits of the documentary he is making on his experience.

At their home on the NSW Central Coast, Adro’s wife smiles across at him with pride. Sam says his saggy skin never bothered her and that the decision to have surgery was entirely his. “I was so scared with the first operation. I spent the whole day wrapped in a doona sitting on the lounge and waiting for a phone call from the doctor,” she says.

Although Sam, 27, would love Adro whatever he looked like, she is delighted that he is now healthy and fit enough to really enjoy their children. “One image that will stay in my head forever is the first time Adro took Odessa to the play park after coming off the show. Previously he would sit on a bench outside, but this time he was playing in the tunnels for an hour and a half. When he came out he was smiling from ear to ear.”

While Adro says his new body makes him feel sexier, Sam says she also enjoys the emotional and spiritual development that has come with his weight loss.

In fact, Adro regards his time on The Biggest Loser, particularly the challenging time at the holistic health retreat Camp Eden, as so significant that he named his son after it.

“Camp Eden was a turning point for me. It was there that I confronted my demons and realised I was not going to be fat ever again. When we were thinking of names, I wanted something that related to the new me and both Sam and I loved the name Eden.”

Even Eden’s middle name, Harper, is a tribute to the show’s trainer Bob Harper, who Adro believes made the difference between success and failure.

Born weighing 4020g (8lb 14oz) (or as Adro says, “one Mars bar short of 9lb”), the little boy completes a momentous year for the family.

Sadly, Adro’s success has come at a price, particularly the collapse of his car repair business, which floundered without him at the helm. He has launched a new health and fitness enterprise — adrohealth.com — and has hopes of opening health centres called The New Me.

But as he says, he has his health and his family. “My life is so good that every day starts with a pinch. I think it will last forever.”

One week into her weight loss program,Big Brother‘s Vesna has a confession to make: she had no idea just how much she’d let herself go in the house!

“The first week’s been very painful,” laughs the hairdresser turned popular reality TV star, who has begun her new diet and has been busy working out in the gym. “It’s not easy — it really isn’t, but I’m committed to it. I just never realised how unfit I was.”

Woman’s Day has asked Melbourne personal trainer Troy Hill, from Fitness First gyms, and Melbourne dietician Melanie McGrice to help Vesna get back into shape and lose the 12kg she stacked on during her three months as a Big Brother contestant.

“I knew it was going to be hard, but Troy is an amazing trainer — he’s really good. He just pushes me and I can’t get anything past him!”

Has the feisty Vesna, who reveals her clothes are already feeling looser, had to follow through on her warning to Troy that she may need to “vent” during their workouts?

“Yes, he’s heard that I hate him a few times,” she says, adding, “but he loves it. He knows that when I say I hate him, it means he’s working me hard.”

Murray Corbett appreciates a good steak, perhaps more than most! The 41-year-old recruitment company director and father of three from Newcastle, north of Sydney, has spent about 18 months of his life being unable to swallow properly — a condition called dysphagia.

“A few minutes after I’d eat or drink anything, I’d have to race to the toilet and vomit,” he explains. “If ever we were at a restaurant, I’d have to do this maybe seven or eight times throughout the meal.”

Murray first had trouble swallowing in 2002. He suffered a range of conflicting symptoms, which made his condition difficult to diagnose. He saw several doctors to try to find out what was going on, but no one had any definite answer — he was even told it could be cancer of the oesophagus.

In the meantime, Murray existed on only small bits of food, so was losing lots of weight and almost permanently dehydrated. “I lost about 10kg, and the fact that I didn’t know why made life pretty difficult,” he says.

Murray then decided to see another specialist who he’d heard was the “top” doctor in this area. Dysphagia is usually a symptom of other conditions, and the specialist diagnosed Murray with something called achalasia straight away.

“The oesophagus is like a ‘sausage case’, and when you swallow, the muscles work in unison to push food down into the stomach,” Murray explains. “Then a valve, where the oesophagus joins the stomach, opens at the right time and allows food to drop into the stomach.

“But with achalasia, that valve clamps shut because nerves in the lower oesophagus die, so there’s no signal to the valve to open. Therefore anything you eat or drink backs-up in the oesophagus, because that ‘trap door’ is not opening. So then you’ve just got to expel it.”

The treatment for achalasia was a procedure where they insert a “balloon” down the oesophagus. When the balloon straddles the valve it is inflated to stretch the valve to the point where it partly tears. Then, because it’s torn, it becomes loose and doesn’t clamp shut again.

Murray was told his treatment should correct the condition permanently, but he may need to have the treatment repeated in about 10 years. Now steak and his other favourite, chicken foccacia, are back on the menu.

“It’s such a relief,” he says. “Not just to be eating normally again, but simply to know what was wrong. For a while there I was scared because some of the earlier prognoses were pretty bleak.

“My whole outlook has changed. I have a lot to live for … I am a happy man.”

What is dysphagia?

Dysphagia is the medical term for any symptom of swallowing difficulty.

It can be caused by neurological conditions affecting the muscles of the pharynx (throat), such as Parkinson’s disease, MS, stroke, cerebral palsy, head and neck surgical procedures, and certain medications. It can also be caused by a wide range of problems with the oesophagus such as achalasia, acid reflux disease and cancer.
