I married a man with half a face https://www.nowtolove.com.au/news/real-life/joseph-williams-vania-williams-i-married-a-man-with-half-a-face/ Thu, 11 Jul 2024 06:54:43 +0000 https://www.nowtolove.com.au/?p=519429 People stare but we ignore them

The post I married a man with half a face appeared first on Now To Love.

• Joseph Williams, 42, from Chicago, was born with an extremely rare condition called Otofacial syndrome
• After facing judgment all of his life, he met Vania at work
• Originally shocked by his appearance, Vania fell in love with Joseph’s sense of humour and positivity, and the couple wed after a year
• Here, Vania Hughes-Williams, 39, shares their beautiful story…
• The door of the warehouse I worked at opened, and I looked up. Seeing a man walking in, I gasped.

Half his face was missing!

I rubbed my eyes, thinking I was imagining things, but his appearance remained the same.

He must’ve been in some sort of accident, I thought sympathetically, trying not to stare.

In the following days at my job as a packager, I found out his name was Joseph.

He seemed friendly enough, but I was too nervous to speak to him, in case I said the wrong thing.

But, one day, I was having trouble working one of the machines at my workstation, and he came over.

Using a type to voice converter on his phone, he asked if I needed a hand.

“If you don’t mind,” I said, smiling.

Unfortunately, he couldn’t fix it.

“It’s probably best to move to another station,” he said.

I went to grab my stuff, but he stopped me.

“Allow me,” he said, scooping it up.

What a gentleman, I thought.

We started chatting regularly after that.

Every day, Joesph, 41, would bring me a drink, and he’d make me laugh until my sides hurt. I loved his sense of humour!

We spoke about serious things, too.

He told me he wasn’t long out of a 10-year relationship.

“It was on and off,” he said.

“I’ve been in some bad relationships, too,” I told him.

I never asked Joseph about his face, but one day he brought it up.

“I was born with a condition called Otofacial syndrome,” he said “So, I was born without a jaw or chin.”

He told me that when he was two days old, he was given multiple surgeries, including a bone and skin graft, as doctors tried to construct a jaw for him, but as he grew, his body rejected it.

His birth mum then put him up for adoption and although he was taken in by a loving family, he’d dealt with judgement from others all his life.

“I’m sorry you’ve had to go through that,” I said.

Over time, I found myself becoming drawn to Joseph, but my feelings confused me.

So, when he asked me on a date to a comedy club, I didn’t go.

I wasn’t ready to be in a relationship and worried what people would think, but as much as I tried to push aside my feelings for Joseph, I couldn’t.

When he asked me out again on Valentine’s Day, I said yes. We went dancing and had so much fun.

“I’m glad I came,” I told him.

We continued dating after that.

We’d go to places neither of us had been before and do activities we’d never done.

We also went to a lot of restaurants, even though Joseph couldn’t eat anything. He could have solids but they had to be blended, as he ate through a tube in his stomach.

“I just want you to be happy,” he told me when we dined out.

In time, I introduced him to a few of my family and friends.

Most were shocked but they soon realised how happy Joseph made me.

My mum, Janice, worried I’d have to spend my life looking after him.

But once she realised Joseph was fiercely independent and wanted to look after me, she fell in love with him, just as I had.

The day we eloped in June 2020 Image: Supplied

Then, in 2020, a year into our relationship, Joseph and I started discussing marriage. It was something we both wanted.

There was no big proposal or ring. We just decided one day to go and get a marriage licence.

While we were there, the lady issuing it had a question for us.

“Do you want to get married today?” she asked.

My heart leapt in my chest. It felt wild and spontaneous, but something made us say yes!

We wouldn’t have been allowed a big do during the pandemic anyway.

So, in front of strangers and casually dressed, we said, “I do”.

We moved in together afterwards.

I’d lived with my mum before and when I told her I was married, she was shocked.

“You two are crazy,” she said.

“Maybe,” I laughed. “But we’re in love.”

Often, when we’re out in public, people will point and stare.

Sometimes they even take pictures.

We try to ignore them but occasionally Joseph will confront them and call them out on their ignorance.

We’d rather people come up and ask us questions and try to understand.

Joseph knows he looks different, but he’s still a person with a heart, feelings and a brain.

He should be treated with respect, just like anyone else.

I don’t even see his disability anymore.

Sometimes when I’m making a drink, I’ll automatically make him one and put it in front of him.

When I realise he can’t sip it, we both burst out laughing and Joseph pretends to toss it back.

His ability to stay positive is one of the many things I love about him.

Kissing isn't a problem!
Kissing isn’t a problem!

When we can afford to, we’re going to renew our vows and finally have the big white wedding we’ve never had.

I want the whole fairytale, as that’s what marrying Joseph is to me.

We’ve spoken about children, but now we’re both older, we’re more drawn to the idea of adoption.

It would mean a lot to Joseph to give a child, who’s in a similar situation to him, a loving home.

It would mean the world to me too.

Whatever path we decide to take, we’ll take it together.

Our love for each other is eternal, no matter what others say.

I was attracted to Vania from the first time I saw her, but I thought she was too pretty for me. I was just happy with being around her and us being friends. But over time, feelings developed on her side, too, and she started to see that I was a good, honest man and I’d always be there for her and protect her.

• Jess Ruhfus was inspired to start her post-flush perfume business when she was sharing a house with two men
• She created No.2, a chic loo fragrance that is Australian made, vegan, cruelty-free and all natural
• Unwanted bathroom smells are banished, keeping your reputation in tact
• Here, Jess Ruhfus, 32, from Balgowlah, NSW, shares her story – and how her boujee perfume drops can save your relationship or help you out on a first date
• Walking past the bathroom, I caught a whiff of something that made me gag.

“Seriously guys,” I said crossly as I entered the lounge room. “Please can you use the air freshener I bought?”

It was during the 2020 COVID lockdown and I lived with my boyfriend, Matthew, and a male housemate in a small flat with only one bathroom.

With all of us working from home, this meant we became a little too intimate with each other’s toilet use!

So, to try and remedy the problem, I bought all sorts of air fresheners.

But the ones out there were synthetic and I didn’t love the idea of the spray getting on my skin, or even breathing it in.

None of them looked that pretty either.

“I wish there were products out there that you could proudly display in the bathroom,” I told Matthew.

It made me think that I could potentially create my own solution to our stinky toilet problem.

Jess Ruhfus who founded No.2 Co post-flush perfume drops is saving marriages
Founder Jess Ruhfus wanted to create something that looks as good as it smells

The science bit

I did an online essential oils chemistry course.

At home, I experimented to find the perfect mix of natural essential oils that nullified unwanted toilet smells and replaced them with a citrus scent within 30 seconds.

I learned that if I used a sugar cane alcohol base, then with a few drops of the oil into the loo after flushing, they would sink to the bottom. The fragrance would then rise, trapping any odours.

Next, I designed a sleek recyclable glass bottle for it.

No.2 post-flush perfume drops have a citrus scent

Keeping it classy

My friends and family tested it and loved it, so I made 1000 bottles to sell. I posted about it on social media and gifted 20 to friends who also posted about it and word spread.

I called it No. 2 – a cheeky reference to Chanel No. 5 – with the tag line “Keeping your reputation intact”.

Within two weeks, I’d sold out completely.

“Wow,” I said to Matthew. “I’m onto something here.”

“You’d better make some more,” he said.

So, I found a manufacturer and I sold out again four times over.

One busy day, I sold $11,000 worth of products!

A promotional image for No.2 post-flush perfume drops
A classy photoshoot to promote No.2 Photo: Create Creme

By December 2023, I sold my software business to focus on my post-flush perfume drops full time.

Now, I sell them on my website and social media pages to people all over Australia and New Zealand.

They’re used in boutique hotels and I do guerrilla campaigns where I sneak into the bathrooms of fancy restaurants and leave my bottles there.

The response from happy customers has been great.

“From a married man that shares a bathroom with his wife, this is a must-have,” said one reviewer. “Trust me, it’ll save your marriage.”

In fact, many people have called it a “marriage saver”!

These days, we have a travel-size edition you can take on planes or to dinner which has proven popular.

No.2 is perfect for long-haul flights or taking overseas. Pictured in Greece

Now, we’re launching in the US and I have other products in the works.

I’m so proud of my loo fragrance. Who knows, one day it might even make me stinking rich!

No.2 is available in 100ml ($29.00) and in a mini travel size ($15.00). To shop, click here.

No.2 is a boujee loo fragrance that is Australian made and all natural, that rids the loo of unwanted smells & keeps your reputation intact.

Coming to the rescue in the workplace, on first dates, hosting guests, entertaining at home, maintaining happy marriages or travelling on long-haul flights, No.2 is an essential-oil based formula of drops, pipetted directly into the loo after flushing.

Within 30 seconds, notes of mandarin, geranium & bergamot nullify unwanted smells and replace them with a beautiful citrus scent.

Sitting pretty in a sleekly-designed glass bottle, No.2 looks chicer than synthetic aerosol options.

Sitting across from the doctor, I was relieved.

I’d been experiencing dizzy spells, exhaustion and terrible moods.

Aged 40, I had three kids under 10, and I wanted to be the best mum to them, and wife to my husband, Clive.

After lots of back and
forth with doctors looking
for an answer, one had recommended a glucose tolerance test.

And now, the results were surprising.

I wasn’t overweight, but I was hypoglycaemic and pre-diabetic.

People are often surprised when I tell them my age. (Image: Supplied)

The doctor asked me to list the foods I ate over a day.

“Some days I’ll demolish half a Sara Lee cheesecake for breakfast and a packet of biscuits in the afternoon,” I confessed. “Chocolate is my weakness. I can eat an entire block before coming to my senses.”

Saying it out loud, a terrible thought entered my mind: I’m a sugar addict.

I discovered the benefit of adding more protein, which helped keep me fuller longer.

A small amount of fresh fruit helped with sweet cravings.

I was once a self-confessed sugar addict. (Image: supplied)

Months later, tests showed steady blood sugar.

My energy had returned, and I was exercising.

A year on, I embraced a more moderate approach.

I would have two squares of dark chocolate every day and when I went out for a meal I’d have half a glass of wine or strawberries and fresh cream for dessert.

Then, aged 53, I was in the US with Clive, a property developer, for a business trip.

By chance, I found myself chatting with a woman who introduced me to a natural, sugar-free alternative – Xylitol.

“You can bake with it and enjoy the foods you love,” she said, offering me a few sachets to try.

Back home, I made lamingtons, cheesecakes, chocolate mousse and ice- cream. They were delicious!

Me with my husband Clive. (Image: Supplied)

Eighteen months later, in 2002, I brought a small shipment to Australia.

From there, I built my business SweetLife to distribute Xylitol across the country and share recipes and healthy living tips.

I hadn’t worked for 25 years as I’d been a stay-at-home mum, but I taught myself to use a computer, spent three years taking business classes at night and began doing 90-hour weeks.

SweetLife is now in its 22nd year and is a big success.

I’ve had the opportunity to speak to thousands about transforming my health and help them with theirs.

“The healthier and fitter you are, the more you’ll enjoy life,” I tell them.

I did some modelling in my 30s. (Image: supplied)

Today, I’m 76, a grandmother of four, and I’m very fit, thanks to tennis, yoga and weekly Pilates.

And I’m as happy to wear a bikini on Perth’s Cottesloe Beach as I was 40 years ago.

People are always surprised when I tell them my age.

If they ask how I stay looking so youthful, I say I’ve been sugar free for 35 years.

This year, Clive and I will celebrate 50 years of marriage – and I can credit part of its longevity to my commitment to being the best I can be.

Age is just a number, but AGE is also my mantra for living: A is for attitude, G is for gratitude, and E is for ‘ego-tude’.

I made the last word up, but we all need a little healthy ego, it’s what drives us to be our best!

Is a massage gun better than a vibrating massager?

While both massage guns and vibrating massagers offer benefits for muscle relaxation and relief, they work in slightly different ways.

Massage guns use percussive therapy to target specific muscle groups with rapid bursts of pressure, which can be particularly effective for deep tissue massage and targeting specific areas of tension or pain.

Vibrating massagers, on the other hand, use continuous vibrations to stimulate muscles and promote relaxation, often covering larger muscle groups.

There seems to be countless trends, ingredients and supplements making the rounds within the beauty and wellness space at the moment – but how do you know which ones actually work and aren’t just a gimmick?

Now To Love spoke with Jessica Sepel, wellness expert and founder of vitamin and supplement company JSHealth Vitamins, to find out just exactly what trends and products you should jump on the bandwagon of to help you live a healthy and balanced lifestyle and improve both your inner and outer beauty.

Jessica Sepel, founder of JSHealth. (Image: JSHealth)

Jessica’s overarching philosophy is to nourish your health and confidence from the inside out. She is a big believer in beauty and health starting from within, and is a strong advocate for having a healthy and balanced lifestyle, focusing on what you eat first and foremost.

“It all starts with what’s on your plate, and focusing on whole foods is key! I recommend incorporating a rainbow of fruits and vegetables for their diverse vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants,” Jessica shared.

Based on this philosophy, Jessica also believes that fad diets that promise unrealistic results and are based on restrictive rules are unsustainable and often don’t deliver.

“Instead of opting for quick fixes, I believe in building a sustainable, balanced approach to wellness, inside and out. This means focusing on high-quality ingredients, mindful eating and truly listening to your body.”

Indeed, Jessica has revealed that JSHealth Vitamins was founded and built upon the basis of giving up fad dieting, so it is one topic she is extremely passionate about.

JSHealth Vitamins’ Hair + Energy supplement is a best seller. (Image: JSHealth Vitamins)

When asked about emerging trends in the health and wellness industry, Jessica said “the rise of ingestible beauty that focuses on hair and skin health from the inside out” is one trend she is particularly excited about.

“By focusing on a gut-friendly diet rich in wholefoods, fibre and fermented foods, we can support the health of our gut microbiome – leading to a complexion that reflects what is on the inside: a thriving, balanced and radiant environment,” Jessica told Now To Love.

JSHealth Vitamins has a huge focus on hair and skin health, with their Hair + Energy supplement being a best-selling product and named the “Number 1 Hair Supplements Product in Australian Pharmacy”.

Their Hair + Energy capsules claim to support hair growth and health, maintain hair thickness and strength, maintain nail health and strength, support skin health, and support energy levels.

Promoting beauty from within and the connection between inner health and outer beauty is a key pillar in JSHealth’s product philosophy, and Jessica has revealed that her “passion is helping people reclaim their confidence.”

“When you start to prioritise wellness from within, this allows you to cultivate a strong inner foundation of lasting comfort and confidence that radiates outwards,” Jessica said.

Knowing the overwhelming nature of the world of supplements, JSHealth’s product formulas were created alongside leading experts in the field “to create targeted formulas designed to address specific concerns,” so that consumers know exactly what each supplement is designed to support.

This is a key reason as to why JSHealth Vitamins’ products are named after their purposes.

Jessica said: “People often know about everyday supplements like vitamin C or fish oil, but might not understand how these nutrients can help them, especially when paired with other key ingredients for synergy and effectiveness.”

“We designed our Signature Range to bridge this knowledge gap and provide solutions that are easy to understand and apply. Each formula’s name clearly states its purpose to simplify the selection process,” she continued.

One of JSHealth Vitamins‘ initiatives, Menstrual March, is currently taking place where they focus on women’s health.

According to Jessica, the company “is looking at how hormones and mood are related and how to support balance throughout the ebb and flow of womanhood”.

Some of their most popular products are their Hair + Energy, Detox + Debloat and Skin + Digestion formulas. (Image: JSHealth Vitamins)

JSHealth Vitamins has a large range of products with supplements, skincare, haircare, proteins and protein bars, and a variety of accessories available.

The brand also has some new products and ranges on the horizon, with Jessica telling Now To Love that they’re adding to their sleep and night-time range as well as expanding their “science-backed vitamin skincare line with a very exciting and transformative product”.

As a leading brand in the health and wellness space, JSHealth Vitamins ultimately aims to “empower [their] community to make informed decisions about their wellness” and the company takes an “intuitive, solution-focused approach” in promoting beauty from within.

]]>

Steering my pram into the bustling cafe, I took a seat.

“Better get this little one fed,” I said to the other new mums I was with.

I scooped up my son, Theodore, six weeks, and fumbled for the hem of my top to discreetly yank it up.

My loose-fitting maternity T-shirt was designed to keep me covered in moments like this, but the functionality of it – minimal at best – came at the cost of fashion.

As Theo fed, I glanced around at my friends and noticed they were wearing the same type of go-to uniform – leggings and baggy T-shirts.

“Imagine a nursing top that looked great, made feeding easy and guaranteed you wouldn’t accidentally flash your boobs,” I said to the girls.

Breastfeeding my bub Theo pushed me to think about how women could feed their littlies and look stylish. (Image: Supplied)

“I’d take one in every colour,” one mum chimed.

“I’d pay good money for that,” said another.

Everyone agreed comfort, discretion and style didn’t seem to exist for breastfeeding mums.

I wondered if there might be a niche for a fashionable nursing garment to do double duty as maternity wear.

Before falling pregnant with Theo, I’d had a great career in banking spanning 13 years. I loved the busy days and late nights and the thrill of solving complex problems.

My husband, Matthew, 34, was supportive at home but kept busy in his job as an engineer.

Without my career, I had no idea what to do with my spare time.

“I feel like my brain is turning to mush,” I told Matthew one day.

Before falling pregnant with Theo, I’d had a great career in banking spanning 13 years. (Image: Supplied)

Coffee with the mums had left me feeling inspired, and I started sketching out designs for better breast-feeding tops.

I wanted to create a trendy fitted T-shirt that made breast-feeding easy with zips that allowed for easy access.

“Just have fun with it,” Matthew encouraged. “See where it takes you.”

His words struck a chord.

With a more relaxed approach, I took my idea to a pattern maker who helped me develop early T-shirt samples.

I named the business MylkSociety, and between feeds and nappy changes I worked on getting it off the ground.

Finally, in November 2019, I launched the range online.

Despite telling people about it on social media. sales were slow and when Covid lockdowns hit in 2020, I didn’t get a single order.

It was disheartening but I persevered.

Coming up with a snappy new slogan helped the business really take off! (Image: Supplied)

I came up with a new slogan: Breastfeed with ease – anywhere, anytime, especially at home!

Suddenly, online orders went through the roof. The new campaign had worked!

My 100 per cent Australian made T-shirts sold for $69 each, and incredibly, in the first year, sales reached six figures.

I was gobsmacked!

In time, it became a multi-million dollar business.

Despite the success, I kept my job in banking but extended my maternity leave to 20 months to nurture it more.

That came in handy when I fell pregnant again with my second child, Charlotte, who arrived in 2021.

Me with my second child Charlotte. (Image: Supplied)

This year, to focus more on motherhood and my career, I sold MylkSociety but on the same day I signed the deal, I was made redundant.

I took it as a positive sign I was ready to step into the next version of me.

Today, in between juggling two kids, I have an online business where I coach, consult and guide women who are building their own businesses. My aim is help women acheive financial freedom.

Sure, the journey is sometimes unpredictable, but I’ve learned a healthy dose of fun – and the right mindset – goes a long way.

The Daily Grind: Most people don’t realise they grind their teeth https://www.nowtolove.com.au/health/body/teeth-grinding-79807/ Sun, 14 Jan 2024 19:30:00 +0000 https://www.nowtolove.com.au/health/body/teeth-grinding-79807 Headaches, tooth sensitivity and neck pain are all signs of this common habit.

The post The Daily Grind: Most people don’t realise they grind their teeth appeared first on Now To Love.

]]>
Jaw aches, headaches and neck pain are the kinds of things that many of us experience.

While there can be many causes, a common reason comes down to teeth grinding, something that many of us do without realising.

This can be a side affect or stress and can even lead to tooth chipping.

(Credit: Getty)

And, as many dentists will tell you, a growing number of us are doing it more than ever.

“Bruxism is the medical term that refers to the involuntary act of grinding or clenching the teeth,” explains Dr Gamer Verdian, a dentist and founder of Dental Lounge in Sydney.

You might sometimes catch yourself clenching or grinding your teeth when you’re stressed or concentrating.

However, it mostly occurs during sleep, so it’s possible you may not know you’re doing it.

“Many people with nocturnal bruxism remain unaware of their condition until symptoms appear or until a dental professional notices telltale signs of tooth wear,” Dr Verdian says.

What causes it?

Bruxism is surprisingly common in kids, although most children eventually outgrow it.

However, it can rear its head during any stage of life, especially when we’re stressed.

“We have a seen a huge uptick since COVID as the daily stresses of Australians [are] magnified,” Dr Verdian says.

“Potential factors include increased daily stresses, lifestyle changes and perhaps even an increase in sleep disorders.”

Night-time bruxism is common in people with sleep disorders like snoring and sleep apnoea. Smoking, alcohol and some medications can also increase your risk.

A dental check-up can help identify any symptoms of bruxism.

(Credit: Getty)

The symptoms

Over time, grinding and clenching can wear down the hard layer of enamel on our teeth.

This can make them flatter and shorter, and cause other problems like cracks and tooth sensitivity.

“The most common presentation we see in our practices is unexpected chipping or breaking,” Dr Verdian says.

Additional signs include headaches, face and neck pain, soreness in the jaw or a popping feeling when chewing, yawning or speaking.

Excessive grinding can also build up the masseter muscle of the jaw, causing the bottom half of the face to appear wider.

If night-time clenching and grinding is loud enough, it can cause partner disturbance.

“Long-term bruxism can lead to a range of complications,” Dr Verdian says.

“This includes temporomandibular joint disorders, myofascial pain, dental complications like tooth loss, and even changes in facial appearance.”

Affordable dental options will give you something to smile about!

(Credit: Getty)

Can I stop it?

Clenching and grinding can be difficult habits to shake, especially since many of us aren’t even aware when it’s happening.

Dr Verdian says the most common treatment for bruxism is to wear a nightguard or occlusal splint.

They start at around $500, but they may cost more depending on what your dentist recommends.

“These are our most common frontline defense against bruxism. There are many different types and designs,” he explains.

“They offer a protective barrier between the upper and lower teeth, reducing wear.”

Some dentists now provide Botox injections, which work by relaxing the masseter muscle.

This typically costs between $400 and $1000, but Dr Verdian advises that the effects aren’t permanent.

“They offer temporary relief and can come with side effects,” he explains.

“Long-term medication use isn’t typically recommended as a primary solution for bruxism.”

Depending on the cause, it can sometimes help to get to the heart of the problem.

For instance, if stress is your main trigger, strategies like meditation, deep breathing or counselling could be beneficial.

“While bruxism can’t always be ‘cured’ in the traditional sense, it can be effectively managed,” says Dr Verdian.

“Interventional strategies depend largely on the underlying causes and the patient’s specific symptoms.”

How Married At First Sight, reality TV and Instagram changed the way we think about plastic surgery https://www.nowtolove.com.au/health/body/reality-tv-plastic-surgery-70867/ Mon, 31 Jan 2022 04:00:00 +0000 https://www.nowtolove.com.au/health/body/reality-tv-plastic-surgery-70867 A specialist plastic surgeon weighs in on the changing face of cosmetic procedures online.

The post How Married At First Sight, reality TV and Instagram changed the way we think about plastic surgery appeared first on Now To Love.

]]>
Trigger warning: This article contains mentions of body image issues, which may be triggering for some readers.

From Jessika Power, to Martha Kalifatadis and Julia Morris, Australian celebrities are becoming more open about getting cosmetic surgery.

While some flaunt dramatic transformations and go into detail about their procedures, others choose to keep the specifics private.

But regardless of how much these stars share about their enhancements, one thing stays the same: Australian women can’t tear their eyes away.

Julia Morris, Martha Kalifatadis and Jessika Power have all been open about undergoing cosmetic procedures.

(Image: Instagram)

Fans and critics alike flock to see Married At First Sight stars show off their latest transformations and Instagram posts about their nose jobs, breast implants or lip fillers are flooded with comments every time.

But is this cosmetic procedure boom among social media and reality TV stars changing what we think about plastic surgery?

Dan Kennedy, Specialist Plastic Surgeon and President of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), tells Now To Love exclusively that social media has had a huge impact on the way people view cosmetic procedures.

“Exposure to procedures via Instagram, Snapchat, Married at First Sight and influencers has the effect of normalising cosmetic procedures and changing the expectation of patients,” he explains, adding that this be positive and negative.

Studies have shown that young women are more likely to want cosmetic surgery after seeing images of stars with cosmetic procedures and more social media use has been linked to a higher desire for surgery, as well as an increasingly negative impact on body image.

So, when stars like Jessika Power take to Instagram to show off the results of a $13,000 ‘fat transfer’ surgery to enhance her breasts, you better believe the people who see her posts are Googling the same procedure.

Dan admits he’s had several patients bring in social media photos of stars as their desired “after” appearance, and the results they’re asking for are growing increasingly dramatic.

“When I went into practise the ideal goal was that your plastic surgery ‘did not show’,” he reveals.

WATCH: MAFS’ Jessika reveals all the plastic surgery she’s had. Story continues after video.

“Some patients have now been influenced to want an unnaturally large set of lips, or breasts, or buttocks, and want their surgery to display ‘value for money’.”

But those kinds of drastic results come with unwanted long-term side effects like stretched skin and wrinkles; though we rarely see that side of surgery on social media.

Dan obviously isn’t against people undergoing surgery, he just wants potential patients to be informed about the realities of these procedures.

“Cosmetic procedures and surgery can work to enhance confidence, but they can also bring pain and regret if things don’t go well. Procedures can fail to meet expectations even when the outcome is good,” he adds.

Just look at MAFS alum Davina Rankin: she had a breast augmentation at 18 to boost her confidence, but underwent a second surgery to remove them last year after experiencing symptoms linked to breast implant illness.

Davina, who also rose to fame on Married At First Sight, was open about undergoing explant surgery to remove her breast implants.

(Image: Instagram)

Martha Kalifatadis is another celebrity working to change the conversation around plastic surgery on social media by choosing not to share details of her own procedures.

The former MAFS bride opts not to advise fans who asked about her breast implants, writing on Instagram: “It really worries me when people ask me for advice on this or would even be influenced by what I say.

“I’ve decided not to share details about my surgery on here because it’s not a one size fits all.”

She went on to say that she would feel responsible if someone took her advice and went on to have a procedure they were unhappy with, or that had negative outcomes.

The 32-year-old added: “You need to speak with your surgeon, the only person who is qualified to give their opinion on which option is best for you.”

Martha chooses not to share details about her breast augmentation and rhinoplasty with social media followers.

(Image: Instagram)

It’s advice that Dan echoes, saying that anyone considering surgery should think carefully before approaching a specialised practitioner for a consultation.

He warns against surgeons who put money before professionalism and those who will say “yes” to any procedure, and urges patients not to judge a practitioner’s skill by Instagram photos alone.

In 2019, the chair of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons Ethics Committee Dr Richard Theile wrote in the Australasian Journal of Plastic Surgery that practitioner’s “moral cues don’t come from Instagram.”

It’s a concept we should also be applying to our own individual approaches to plastic surgery.

While cosmetic procedures and the people who seek them out should never be demeaned, trolled or demonised, these surgeroes also shouldn’t be glorified or normalised to the point of promoting unrealistic beauty standards.

Julia shared these before and after photos from her surgery in 2021.

(Image: Instagram)

Being open about cosmetic procedures online can be a great thing, like when I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! host Julia Morris shared her joy at the outcome of her brow lift and eyelid surgery in 2021.

But we should always take these posts with a grain of salt and a healthy dose of reality, and when it comes to seeking out procedures of our own, it may be wise to reflect on Julia’s words.

“I’ve got absolutely no interest in anybody’s opinion … it’s something that I wanted to do for me,” she said.

If you or someone you know has been affected by any of the issues raised in this article, help is always available. Call The Butterfly Foundation’s national helpline on 1800 33 4673 or visit their website

This is what Ita Buttrose wants you to know about osteoporosis https://www.nowtolove.com.au/health/body/what-you-need-to-know-about-osteoporosis-67581/ Tue, 01 Jun 2021 03:00:00 +0000 https://www.nowtolove.com.au/health/body/what-you-need-to-know-about-osteoporosis-67581 Did you know that osteoporosis is more common than breast and cervical cancers combined?

The post This is what Ita Buttrose wants you to know about osteoporosis appeared first on Now To Love.

Every day, millions of Australians take steps to better their health. From morning walks and yoga classes to eating a well-balanced diet filled with fruit and vegetables, being healthy is something that comes naturally Down Under, thanks to our outdoorsy lifestyle.

While lifestyle is important, it’s not always enough. You might eat well and exercise regularly – but when was the last time you had a bone density scan?

Osteoporosis is a chronic condition that weakens bones over time, making them more likely to break, which can lead to a life-impacting loss of mobility. With two thirds of Australians over the age of 50 at risk, osteoporosis is more common than you think. It’s time to put your bone health front of mind.

Journalist Ita Buttrose is committed to educating Australians on osteoporosis and the importance of taking control of your health by booking a bone density scan. Here’s what she wants you to know:

• Osteoporosis affects more than 1.36 million Australians

• Osteoporosis is more common than breast and cervical cancer combined.

Often referred to as ‘the silent disease’, osteoporosis can go undetected as symptoms are few and far between until a bone breaks. The good news, though, is that once diagnosed, you can work with your GP to manage the condition using a combination of medication, supplements and lifestyle changes. In the video above, two real women, Yvette, 57, and Sharon, 58, share their experience of living with osteoporosis. To learn more, hit play on the video above.

You can book in for a bone density scan here.

Why you should always ask questions if something doesn’t feel right with your health https://www.nowtolove.com.au/health/body/osteoporosis-diagnosis-treatment-options-67139/ Mon, 22 Mar 2021 03:34:23 +0000 https://www.nowtolove.com.au/health/body/osteoporosis-diagnosis-treatment-options-67139 Christine broke her finger and despite seeing a GP, it just wasn’t healing. A month later, after a second accident, her medical team discovered the real issue.

The post Why you should always ask questions if something doesn’t feel right with your health appeared first on Now To Love.

]]>
About 10 years ago, Christine, now 80, broke her finger. The injury was painful but routine. She took herself to a general practitioner (GP) who put her finger in a splint and sent her on her way to heal at home.

The only problem? Over the following days and weeks, Christine’s finger didn’t improve at the rate it should have. Something wasn’t right – and she could feel it.

One month later, Christine started making her bed – a routine activity that she does every morning – when her finger got caught in the sheet, jerking it sharply, causing her a great deal of pain. She took herself back to her GP where it was discovered that she broke her finger again.

This kind of strain should never result in broken bones. Christine’s doctor ordered a bone density scan where it was discovered that she had osteoporosis. This did not come as a complete shock to Christine, as years earlier her mother had also been diagnosed with osteoporosis. Her doctor reminded her that bone strength is inherited.

“If you pick it up early enough, it’s not a major disaster,” Christine soon learned. Despite receiving a life-altering diagnosis, she considers herself one of the lucky ones. “For some people, the way they pick it up is because they keep on breaking a bone, a major bone, like a leg or a hip or something,” Christine continued. “And normally by that time they can’t really stop it from taking over your life. If my osteoporosis had been further advanced, I wouldn’t be telling you such a simple story.”

Osteoporosis can be a bit of a taboo topic; it is often referred to as ‘the silent disease’ because there are usually no symptoms until a person breaks or fractures a bone. Christine is committed to opening up the conversation – especially with her own family members, given the condition is hereditary. Her mother also suffered from osteoporosis and now her daughter, 35, makes sure she has a calcium-rich diet. “Osteoporosis is not just a disease of old people, but actually you need to start taking care of your skeleton in your late thirties, early forties so that you prevent it happening.”

Now, Christine manages her condition with medication which slows bone loss, improves bone density and reduces the risk of fractures. She also takes calcium and vitamin D every single day.

Five years ago, Christine had another bone density scan and this time, the results were more positive – the osteoporosis had slowed right down.

THE FACTS

What is osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a chronic condition that weakens bones over time, making them more likely to break. Osteoporosis means bones have become porous (sieve-like). If left untreated osteoporosis causes bones to become brittle and fragile.

Are you at risk?

Osteoporosis is most common amongst women over the age of 50; however, men are at risk too. There are many factors that can increase your risk of osteoporosis including family history, low calcium and vitamin D levels, along with having other chronic conditions and lifestyle factors.

You can assess your risk factor here.
