It’s no secret shopping has evolved over the years. While we grew up watching infomercials on 6-in-1 products (Thin Lizzy, we’re looking at you) to cult home buys, we now look to social media platforms to influence our shopping choices.

TikTok in particular has cemented itself as the shopping hub, especially among Gen Z, with everything from viral hair tools to niche beauty products becoming trends and therefore, absolute must-haves. Most even make it to Amazon’s best-sellers, with thousands of reviews behind them.

I for one am not immune to the allure of TikTok and the trends that come with it. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, I love to shop. But I especially love shopping when the recommendation comes from someone who shares the same pain points.

From skincare products that hydrate my skin to haircare items that have revived my strands like no other, I’ve tried several products over the years that I absolutely have no regrets about buying, and I’m highlighting them below.

And the best part? They’re all available on Amazon, so you can add everything in one cart for seamless shopping. You’re welcome.

Become an Amazon Prime member and add all your items to cart to save big during Prime Day. The sale runs from July 16 to 21, so sign up now here to shop during the 30-day trial period, or read our explainer here.

01

Mielle Rosemary Mint Scalp & Hair Strengthening Oil

$18.79 at Amazon

Why we love it: Helps hair grow in no time

One of the very first products TikTok influenced me to buy was this hair oil. And sure enough, years later, it’s still one of the most important steps in my haircare routine. My hair has grown inches from simply using a few drops and massaging into my scalp once a week.

It also has me waking up to silky smooth locks the next day (after a wash), and with peace of mind that I’m doing what I can to help my hair grow.

Our rating: 9/10

Key features:

 • Infused with Biotin
 • Features more than 30 essential oils and extracts

$59.99 (usually $99.50) at Amazon

Why we love it: Helps repair colour-damaged hair

Another haircare product I swear by is the K18 leave-in hair mask – recommended to me by my hairdresser after she took one look at my dyed and damaged locks and knew we had to act.

The mask activates within minutes after applying to damp hair and soaks up immediately for a lightweight feel. My hair already feels much healthier after using it for a few months.

Our rating: 8/10

Key features:

 • Works on the molecular level to reverse hair damage in just 4 minutes

As someone who is a little guilty of skipping sunscreen in my daily routine, I knew I had to find the right one to make it stick. Sure enough, this lightweight formula makes it easy to remember and apply every single day.

Unlike other sunscreens, it doesn’t leave your skin looking shiny afterwards or leave behind a white cast. La Roche-Posay, I dare say, is worth the hype.

Our rating: 7/10

 • SPF 50+
 • Ultra-light invisible and non-shiny finish
 • Suitable for sensitive skin

Celebrity chef Nigella Lawson reveals her ‘secret recipe’ for wrinkle-free skin at 64 https://www.nowtolove.com.au/beauty/nigella-lawson-antiaging-skincare/ Thu, 11 Jul 2024 00:09:43 +0000 https://www.nowtolove.com.au/?p=519401 No, it's not botox!

The post Celebrity chef Nigella Lawson reveals her ‘secret recipe’ for wrinkle-free skin at 64 appeared first on Now To Love.

]]>
At 64, Nigella Lawson‘s glowing, wrinkle-free skin has everyone asking for her secret. Literally.

After relentless begging on social media, the star chef and cookbook author has finally served up the one recipe her fans have been dying for: the fountain of youth.

Nigella Lawson, wrinkle-free, cooking in the kitchen
Nigella Lawson is the domestic goddess that’s helping us age and eat well. (Image: Getty)

And it’s surprisingly simple and even cost-effective. Nigella swears by a nightly regimen that involves just four ingredients: a muslin cloth, a concentrated exfoliating cleanser, a facial oil and a bit of climate control.

The celebrity chef tweeted: “My immutable night time regime: @VH_Beauty Prickly Pear Seed Oil, massaged in after washing my face with a muslin and TempleSpa’s In the Beginning cleanser.

“And no central heating in the bedroom!”

Easy peasy, right? Click your way to wrinkle-free skin a la Nigella’s 3-step night-time routine below.

NIGELLA LAWSON’S 3-STEP SKINCARE ROUTINE

01

CLEANSE WITH CARE

Nigella’s skincare ritual begins with cleansing her face every night using a muslin cloth and an indulgent balm cleanser. Not only does the cleanser remove makeup and impurities, but it also provides a gentle exfoliation thanks to the muslin cloth.

Our pick? The cult-favourite Eve Lom cleanser, $158.99, loved by celebrities like Kate Hudson, Gwyneth Paltrow and Eva Mendez to name a few. Its rich texture and nourishing ingredients leave skin feeling soft and rejuvenated.

02

NOURISH WITH PRICKLY PEAR SEED OIL

After cleansing, Nigella massages her face with prickly pear seed oil. The chef has been known to call this her “face-saving magic”.

This luxurious oil is packed with vitamins E and K, antioxidants and essential fatty acids that hydrate and repair the skin. It’s known for its ability to reduce the appearance of fine lines and improve skin elasticity, making it a perfect addition to an anti-aging routine.

“Put it on at night and you’ll wake up looking as if you’ve been to a spa by the sea, slept 10 hours a night and been off Twitter for a month,” Nigella Lawson wrote in the Sunday Times.

03

KEEP IT COLD

The final step in Nigella’s skincare regimen is a bit unconventional but highly effective: she avoids using central heating in her bedroom.

Central heating can dry out the air, which in turn dries out your skin. By keeping her bedroom cool and humidity balanced, Nigella ensures her skin retains its natural moisture, preventing dryness and promoting a more youthful appearance.

Many celebrities like Jennifer Aniston and Cameron Diaz swear by adding a humidifier to their beauty routines. Running a humidifier pulls moisture back into the air to improve dry, itchy skin and help it retain essential hydration. We love this one from Philips, $139 for a sleek, effective option.

BEAUTY TIPS FOR AGING

Despite her enviable complexion, even Nigella has admitted that the “beauty problem” of getting older has been tough for her. “I’m trying to go with it,” she opened up in an interview with Oprah.

“I think what ages a face most is disappointment and a lack of enjoyment. So I try to do what I love.”

Now that’s some beauty advice we can get behind!

I’ve been using a silk pillowcase for years – and it’s completely changed my frizzy hair https://www.nowtolove.com.au/lifestyle/silk-pillowcase-for-hair/ Thu, 20 Jun 2024 05:41:20 +0000 https://www.nowtolove.com.au/?p=516535 My secret to waking up with smooth and shiny locks every day.

The post I’ve been using a silk pillowcase for years – and it’s completely changed my frizzy hair appeared first on Now To Love.

]]>
Silk pillowcases are one of those items that seem like a luxury, but in reality, are completely necessary if your hair tends to run on the frizzy side and your skin on the oily.

As someone with both, I made the switch from regular cotton to smooth silk a few years ago, and I’ve never looked back. But after a recent bedroom refresh (my old pillowcases no longer matched my aesthetic) I found myself on the hunt for a new one.

This is where I came across The Silk Store – a brand loved for its high-quality silk that promises to reduce frizz and hair breakage and is great for people with sensitive or oily skin.

Basically, everything I needed and more from a silk pillowcase. Below, my full and honest review.

The Silk Store’s Pure Silk Pillowcase review verdict

 • Our rating: 9 out of 10
 • Why we rated it a 9/10: it’s soft, it’s smooth and so is my hair!

Pros

 • Incredibly soft and gentle on your skin and hair
 • Perfect for sensitive or oily skin
 • Breathable and temperature-regulating

Cons

 • Must be hand-washed

silk-pillowcase-for-hair

What’s so special about the Pure Silk Pillowcase?

It does exactly what it promises to do, providing a smooth base to rest on without any frizz or friction to your hair afterwards. Other key features that stood out were:

 • Helps prevent wrinkles and fine lines
 • Standard size (51*66cm) fits most standard-sized pillows
 • Available in a range of colours

The Pure Silk Pillowcase materials

This pillowcase is made from 100 per cent pure mulberry silk, which is less likely to cause irritation or allergies compared to cotton or polyester.

Silk also keeps you cool in summer and warm in winter and reduces the risk of wrinkles, fine lines, frizz, and breakage, while preventing creases and marks on the skin.

Expert’s opinion

“Silk has a smooth texture that reduces friction and helps prevent breakage and frizz,” hair care specialist Emily Rodriguez told The Silk Store.

“By embracing the gentle touch of silk, you’ll wake up to hair that’s smoother than ever,” she added.

How to care for the Pure Silk Pillowcase

If, like me, your main concern with a silk pillowcase is how to wash it, then fear not because the process is quite simple.

For starters, you want to avoid putting your silk in the laundry machine as silk is a natural fibre that can only be washed by hand. So, when washed in the laundry machine, it will lose its shine.

Instead, you want to hand-wash your silk pillowcase – without twisting – and gently drain the water using a towel. Afterwards, let it dry in the shade.

silk-pillowcase-for-hair

Results from our test

Having slept on this pillowcase for a few weeks, I can honestly say I love it. In fact, the only problem I have is that I can no longer sleep on any other pillowcase without feeling weird.

Seriously, once you go silk you can never go back. My hair is unbelievably smooth every morning and my skin doesn’t feel irritated no matter how often I toss and turn in my sleep.

Overall, is Silk Store’s Pure Silk Pillowcase worth it?

I’d say the Pure Silk Pillowcase from The Silk Store is totally worth it. It provides less friction compared to other pillowcases I’ve tried and is incredibly soft to sleep on.

It comes in multiple colours too which is great for matching your current bedsheets or covers.

This viral cleansing balm has me ditching makeup wipes for good https://www.nowtolove.com.au/beauty/alpha-h-melting-moment-cleansing-balm-review/ Thu, 25 Apr 2024 23:08:53 +0000 https://www.nowtolove.com.au/?p=511085 Bye bye complicated removers.

The post This viral cleansing balm has me ditching makeup wipes for good appeared first on Now To Love.

]]>
As someone who tends to wear makeup every day, I’ve cycled through my fair share of makeup removers.

Wipes, cleansing oils, cotton pads and micellar water; no matter what I use, I end up reaching for a second, third, and even fourth attempt to get my face crystal clear of any makeup residue.

So when I heard cleansing balms were making the rounds as the best makeup remover on TikTok, I figured it was worth the shot. After all, what did I have to lose?

One of the viral cleansing balms that comes highly recommended is Alpha-H’s Melting Moment Cleansing Balm, with rave reviews on the brand’s website and thousands of TikTok videos about it.

But what makes Alpha-H’s Melting Moment Cleansing Balm different from any other makeup cleanser on the market? And is it really worth the purchase?

alpha-h-cleansing-balm-review

How do you use the Alpha-H Cleansing Balm?

Before determining whether or not the cleansing balm is worthy or not, it’s important to understand how to use it.

If you’ve dabbled with a cleansing balm before, then it’s pretty simple: you scoop a small amount onto dry skin and gently massage in circular motions for about a minute or so.

Then you rinse off using warm water or a warm damp cotton cloth, making sure you feel your face is thoroughly cleansed afterwards. If not, feel free to repeat.

For me, I found once was more than enough and was rather impressed by how easily it took off all my makeup – and without any residue to be found on my towel afterwards!

From there I go about my skincare routine as normal; double cleansing with my regular cleanser before going in with my serums and moisturiser on my sparkling, clean skin.

Is a cleansing balm worth it?

I found a cleansing balm to be much more efficient than any other method I’ve tried. It’s easier, simpler and much better for the environment

Not only does it cut out the need for single-use plastics, but all Alpha-H’s tubes, bottles and cardboard packaging are 100 per cent recyclable. They even contain 30 – 35 per cent Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) material.

And that’s before we consider all the benefits for the skin. The Melting Moment Cleansing Balm removed all makeup off my skin without feeling stripped or tight afterwards.

According to the brand, the balm-to-cleanser also does this without disrupting the skin’s delicate pH and is said to help with dryness and dehydration, oiliness and shine, makeup removal and SPF removal.

What more could you want? And while I’ve only just started using the cleansing balm, the results have been fairly instantaneous.

alpha-h-cleansing-balm-review

The final verdict

From just a week of using Alpha-H’s Melting Moment Cleansing Balm, I can already tell this is something I’ll be sticking with. Makeup wipes and cleansing oils are over – for me at least.

What I love most about it is the texture: it’s buttery soft and glides over my skin without feeling too harsh or leaving a mess afterwards.

It’s also naturally scented from Tangerine, Yuzu and Vanilla – meaning the fragrance isn’t too harsh or overpowering. Just enough for a sweet touch.

And, travelling with my new cleansing balm is easier with the option of buying an 18g size instead of the regular 90g. Prices start from $19.95 depending on the size.

As they say, your hair is the crown you never take off. So you want to make sure you take good care of it.

There are a variety of different products and tools we use on our hair everyday, but arguably the most-used item in our cupboard is our hairbrush.

You might not think twice about the type of hairbrush you use, but the type of bristles really do make a difference.

Enter the boar bristle brush: designed to minimise breakage, seal split ends and reduce frizz.

Boar bristle brushes create tension and catch every hair, and are gentle on both fine and coarse hair. They are great for gently detangling strands without pulling and use the natural oils from your scalp to create a slick look.

Are boar bristle brushes good for your hair?

A great benefit of boar bristle brushes is that they naturally condition your hair.

As mentioned earlier, the material helps to distribute your scalp oils throughout the rest of your hair.

What hair type should use a boar bristle brush?

Boar bristle brushes are ideal for those who have thick, coarse hair due to their detangling, smoothing and shining benefits.

However, in saying that, they can also help to add volume to fine and normal hair types.

Martha Kalifatidis has one very simple postpartum skincare hack https://www.nowtolove.com.au/beauty/best-skincare-for-postpartum/ Wed, 17 Apr 2024 23:36:51 +0000 https://www.nowtolove.com.au/?p=509436 Because who has the time for a 10-step routine?

The post Martha Kalifatidis has one very simple postpartum skincare hack appeared first on Now To Love.

]]>
As Martha Kalifatidis blows out the candles at her son Lucius’ first birthday, it’s only natural she’ll reflect on those very early postpartum days.

Days where Looch, as she affectionately calls him, would sleep all day long and leave his mum with all the time in the world to continue with her beauty routine.

“I had a lot of time to blow dry my hair and do my skincare. But now that he’s entering toddler stage – I call it terror stage,” she laughs, “there’s no time for that.”

Having just turned one, Lucius is well into his toddler stage, needing “so much attention” and “constant stimulation” from everyone around him. “We’re a lot more hands-on these days,” Martha tells Now To Love.

Image: Instagram

Finding time for self-care, let alone skincare, is not a luxury the 35-year-old mum finds herself with, even with the support of her friends, family and her fiance Michael Brunelli.

“You’ve got five minutes and in those five minutes, you probably have a lot of other things that you want to do,” she says. “Maybe drink a hot coffee, have a hot piece of toast… but with skincare, you have to just slap it on and be done.”

For this reason, Martha has partnered with Olay to help find the perfect postpartum skincare routine, with enough room for her holy grails and nothing else.

“I love the sculpting cream because it’s like a 15-step skincare in one. It does for your skin what an essence, serum, moisturiser and oil would do in one step,” she shares.

But, with anything, everyone’s experience may look a little different. “Some days you might get to do a 10-step skincare routine, and some days you might not even brush your teeth and that’s okay,” she says.

Image: Instagram

However, Martha’s best tip for mums struggling with skincare is to find what they like – and more importantly, what’s good – and just stick with it.

“Gone are the days where you’re like, ‘I’ll try this, I’ll see how this goes’. You just need something reliable. You need something that’s not going to irritate your skin.”

“Also, your hormones are not the same,” she laughs. “So you might be more sensitive than you usually are… I like to use a barrier cream, a really thick one. Always a sunscreen, always a retinol and a really gentle cleanser. They were the hero products that I always used.”

With that, we’ve built a skincare routine that we think would be perfect for mums entering their postpartum stage.

The best skincare for women over 50, according to an expert https://www.nowtolove.com.au/beauty/best-skin-care-products-for-over-50-australia/ Tue, 02 Apr 2024 03:30:10 +0000 https://www.nowtolove.com.au/?p=508858 As our skin changes, so should our skincare.

The post The best skincare for women over 50, according to an expert appeared first on Now To Love.

]]>
As we begin to age, it’s only natural that our skin changes along with us. Women entering their 50s and above in particular face major changes, especially during perimenopause.

While you might think menopause is the time you need to worry, it turns out it’s the period before menopause even begins that you need to reconsider your approach to skincare.

“This is when we experience those dreaded hot flashes, unwelcome breakouts and even possibly rosacea,” skincare expert April Brodie tells Now To Love. “When the time comes along marking the end of our menstrual cycle, this naturally means a rapid decline in hormones.”

“A decrease in our estrogen and progesterone means these hormones are no longer feeding into our skin, and we can see our skin become a lot more dry, thinner and less bouncy which comes hand in hand with a drop in our collagen levels,” she explains.

So, while we’ve grown used to a certain skin type or skincare needs our entire life, we’re now presented with dryer, flatter skin, meaning our routine needs to adapt too.

“Incorporating products containing exfoliating acids into your skincare routine can help rejuvenate mature skin, improve its overall appearance, and enhance the effectiveness of other anti-aging ingredients,” Brodie says.

However, when trying new products it’s essential to start slowly and patch test first, especially if you have sensitive skin or have never used exfoliating acids before.

“Over time, you can gradually increase the frequency of use to achieve optimal results while minimising the risk of irritation,” she adds.

1. SCRUB UP

A change in season can wreak havoc on our skin, leaving it feeling dry and flaky. Give your complexion a refresh with an exfoliating scrub to cleanse and buff away dead skin cells. This heavenly maple scented scrub features natural AHA and quartz to help clean and polish for a glowing complexion.

Epzen AHA Exfoliating Body Wash, $22

2. BARE ALL

If you shave, it’s best to opt for a good-quality razor that’s gentle on skin. Pair with a soothing shaving gel to reduce redness and irritation. If you’re feeling brave enough for a DIY wax, try naturally formulated body strips and follow up with a calming oil to soothe the skin. Marzena Natural

Body Wax Strips 40 pack, $17.99

3. HYDRATION STATION

Heat and humidity can play a huge role in how dry and irritated our skin feels. Reach for a super-hydrating daily body lotion that’s got hyaluronic acid as the star ingredient to help lock in moisture.

Everyday by Frank Body Hydrating Body Lotion, $15.99

4. FEELING FIRM

Uneven, bumpy and sagging skin are all completely normal, but if you’re after a little confidence boost, try switching up your body lotion with a firming formula. Trilogy’s firming lotion uses a dreamy trio of rosehip oil, aloe vera and caffeine to help smooth, tighten and tone your body.

Trilogy Firming Body Lotion, $28.05

5. FAKE IT

Try a gradual self-tanner for natural colour. Tanning drops are great, too, for a sun-kissed look, and they can be added to moisturisers. For something more heavy duty, try bronzing foam by Bali Body with a hydrating formula.

Australian Glow Gradual Tanning Moisturiser, $19.99 and Bali Body Self Tanning Mousse, $29.95

6. HAPPY HANDS

Soothe dry hands with this nourishing cream featuring panthenol and almond oil to help repair chapped skin.

A bold lip with school girl hair combination, an eau natural look and statement eye make-up were the looks on runway 5, 6 and 7.

Runway 5

The look: All the focus is on the lips, bold and gorgeous and bold in a radiant orange shade. Eyes are kept soft with only a touch of golden shadow and no mascara.

Why we love it: More proof that a statement lip is one to master, this look combines the brazenness of a bold lip with the innocence of the schoolyard pony-tail. “There’s definitely a mysterious girl behind this hair. She’s young and flirty, confidently wearing a bold poker red lip. There’s also something very modern about wearing your hair really rough and pair it back with a glam dress” says Caterina Di Biase, Hair Director for L’Oréal Professionnel.

Get the look:

 1. Load in the L’Oréal Professionnel tecni.art Full Volume Extra through the lengths and L’Oréal Professionnel tecni.art Volume Lift at the roots. Apply three layers into the top section and rough-dry in using just your hands.
 1. Create a low, deep side part and section away a top section from ear to ear and back to the crown. To choose where to make your part, go from the bottom of your right brow.
 1. To the remaining bottom section of hair, back comb from underneath to create fullness at the roots. Secure into a low, loose but firmly fastened pony on the opposite side to the part, making sure you cover both ears.
 1. Back comb the remaining top section to enhance the texture and smooth the hair forward, slightly over one eye as you secure it into the existing ponytail. Use another elastic to do this.

Runway 6

The look: Celebrating natural beauty this look presents the perfect balance between lips, eyes and face. Eyes are soft with a touch of shadow and long lashes, lips are soft and nude and skin is super flawless.

Why we love it: Natural beauty at its finest, this look shows off flawless skin and natural hair, two skills to master.

Get the look: L’Oréal Paris Infallible Foundation, L’Oréal Paris Infallible Powder, L’Oréal Paris True Match Touche Magique Concealer

Runway 7

The look: Go for gold with this look that is all about a strong golden eye on a super fine complexion. The golden eye brings the holds the focus with the lips soft and glossy in a delicate golden nude shade.

Why we love it: Dreamy and whimsical, runway 7 combined youthful looking skin with knockout gold eye shadow as a focal point.

Get the look: Eyeshadow L’Oréal Paris Face & Body Powder in Bronze & L’Oréal Paris Color Appeal Trio Pro in Golden Fidelity (403) and L’Oréal Paris Telescopic Explosion Mascara in Black

The hair and make-up looks on the LMFF runways were breathtaking. Take a look at how you can create them for yourself at home (with a little bit of practice)

Runway 1

The look: A classic look, flawless skin with a strong red lip vamped up with a wash of bronze lipgloss. A soft golden eye with the longest of lashes balances this look perfectly.

We love it: This look attracts attention and screams ‘look at my lips’. A statement lip, such as this, will see you through autumn into the winter.

Get the look with L’Oréal Paris Studio Secrets Professional High Definition Lipliner in Red (051) and then fill in with L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Anti-Age Serum in Luminous Scarlet (501) & L’Oréal Paris Glam Shine 6H Bronze in Timeless Ruby (502).

Runway 2

The look: This look makes a statement with a bold and striking eye emphasising the shape of the eye with a strong sweep of black eyeliner. The focus stays on the eyes by keeping the lips soft.

We love it: with the hype surrounding Alice in Wonderland, the sensationally dreamy Tim Burton creation has filtered into the everyday. While this look might not be seen off the catwalk, for the show it took us to a place filled with magic and mystery.

Get the look: Winged eyeliner is making a comeback, jump on the bandwagon with L’Oréal Paris Telescopic Liquid Eyeliner in Black, L’Oréal Paris Color Appeal Trio Pro eyeshadow in Night & Day Black (408) and L’Oréal Paris Telescopic Carbon Black Mascara in Carbon Black.

Starting a beauty brand in your 60s may be considered by some a daunting and overly ambitious venture. Not so for Melbourne grandmother Yvonne Row, 63, and her business partner Marcia Griffin, 61, who didn’t hesitate launching their natural skincare line Griffin + Row with as much enthusiasm and gusto as they have devoted to their many careers and businesses over the past few decades.

“I knew we had a great idea for a skincare brand,” says Yvonne, “and we saw our age as a benefit not a negative, knowing that we could harness and harvest all the wisdom of our years of experience and channel it into this venture.”

Yvonne, a former model who graced the cover of The Australian Women’s Weekly back in 1963 and went on to become a Lady Mayoress of Melbourne to eventually founding Melbourne’s first organic supermarket, Passionfoods, says her involvement with organic foods and natural and organic beauty products over the past 10 years, fuelled her desire to create her own natural skincare line.

“I noticed people’s growing interest in beauty products that didn’t contain parabens, sodium lauryl sulphates and other chemical nasties, and realised that there was a need for a well-priced, natural skincare range that was simple and effective,” she comments.

The result is a terrific natural and straightforward range of products for busy working women, available at Target.

There are so many creative people who have great ideas, but a huge number of these fail to successfully go to market because having a great idea is one thing–getting others to believe in your idea – whether its a product or a service is another. But you need to ask yourself – Who will buy this product/service–? How have you tested your idea — its not good enough for a friend to say that’s a good idea!! You need to do extensive/intensive research.

My business partner and I started griffin+row in order to satisfy customer needs–Yvonne (my business partner) had customers coming to her organic store asking for a range of pure, natural anti-ageing skincare – so we knew that people were keen on this product concept.

I had had 16 years as a CEO of a skincare and cosmetic company so that brought a large amount of knowledge about women’s needs in skincare – we also looked around the broader market to see how serious the trend to natural, no-harmful chemicals is – we learned that this section of the market is growing rapidly- more rapidly than any other part of the skincare industry. So we could validate our idea not through hearsay and guess work-but by working with a consultant who works in this area.

We also researched the global market, which is easy to do now through the internet. We knew that what we planned was part of a global trend -so we have the opportunity for a very large global business.

 • How will your product/service be different to what is currently on the market? What are the unique selling features of your product? How will you differentiate your product in the market? How will it stand out from the rest? Branding of your product or service is really important.

 • Do you have the resources to get this to market? Who is going to finance the development? How long will this take? How much will this cost?

 • What price can you get for this product? How have you come to this decision? What are other like products selling for? How will your price affect volume?

 • Should you make a lower margin but sell more? should you sell fewer at a higher price.

 • Once your idea has been validated and costed, its critical to get the right people around you; banker/lawyer, accountant etc, get referrals to these people/companies — this is one of the keys to success.

 • Begin with the customer in mind and work back from that. Who will buy, what will they pay, how will you get it to them?

 • Do the costings and see if there is a worthwhile margin for you. Think of what else you could do with this money and what return you could get.

 • Find a wise mentor. Plenty of people have started up businesses before you. Ask and learn from them. You don’t need to make all the same mistakes over again!

 • Do serious financial/cash flow assessments. Most small businesses fail because of cash flow and the banks are not in a giving state of mind at the moment!

 • Once you are committed, stay committed and be prepared to work hard and smart. There are very few businesses that are overnight successes.

If you can, fund yourself!!

 • If you have to take on an investor, choose wisely. Be sure that you are clear about expected returns and financial goals

 • Put everything in writing -use a lawyer

 • If you have a partner, put everything in writing and be very clear about expectations. Have a shareholders agreement.

 • Make sure you have enough funds up to the first projected revenue and then more up up your sleeve in case the revenue takes longer to arrive.

 • Do cash flows on a realistic basis and budget carefully. Most small business failures occur because of lack of money and its really hard to get funds for a business project unless you have great contacts and/or a great business plan.

 • Dream up a good idea and go into business the next day

 • Tell everyone you know about the idea and ask their opinion

 • Fail to plan and you plan to fail

 • Be half committed

 • Think you will make a $million over night

 • Work with people lacking integrity

 • Ignore the customer

 • Ignore the risks

 • Think you know everything

Anyone who has ever visited India will never forget the first breathtaking moment they step out of the airport and into the overwhelming heat and chaos of this country.

Hit by a blanket of humidity and a frenzy of sounds, the scent of the air is indelible. Simmering in the heat are the aromas of spices, a sensual mustiness and pervading hints of sandalwood and musk.

A journey through India is as much an exploration of dizzying fragrances as it is of culture and terrain. My initiation to India in the palace-rich state of Rajasthan awakened my love of colour with its pink city of Jaipur, a labyrinth of bazaars and kaleidoscope of dazzling silk saris.

The scents of the East

1.Estee Lauder Private Collection Amber Ylang Ylang Eau de Parfum, 75ml, $240, is built around amber and ylang ylang with spicy notes of sandalwood and vanilla bean.

2. Calvin Klein Secret Obsession, Eau de Parfum, 50ml, $95, resonates with the smoky sexiness of cashmere woods, burnt amber, vanilla, jasmine and mouthwatering plum.

3. Dior J’Adore L’Absolu Eau de parfum, 75ml, $175, created by Francoise Demachy uses the absolutes of three main flowers — Sambac Jasmine from Kerala, Ylang Ylang and Turkish Rose to create an intensely sweet and sophisticated floral fragrance.

4. Tom Ford White Patchouli Eau De Parfum 50ml, $155, uses white patchouli, bergamot and coriander accents to evoke a mysterious eastern mood.

5. Jo Malone Dark Amber & Ginger Lily Cologne, 100ml, $140, warms the soul with cardamom and ginger and evoke passion with orchid, sandalwood and incense.
