Occurring every four years, the Olympic Games are the pinnacle event in the sporting calendar.

The world’s best athletes from nations across the globe compete in the hopes of securing the ultimate achievement – a gold medal.

With less than one month to go until the 2024 Olympics, people are starting to get excited and are itching for the games to start.

In Australia, the Olympics always capture the nation as well as excite, inspire and bring people together all over the country.

As we gear up to the start of the 2024 Olympics, we’re rounding up everything you need to know about the games, including where to watch them.

Where are the 2024 Olympics being held?

The 2024 Olympic Games are taking place in Paris, France, with multiple venues across the city, and country, being utilised.

Iconic spaces being used for the games include Château de Versailles, Eiffel Tower Stadium and the Grand Palais, among many others. 

Additionally, the surfing action will be held in Teahupo’o in Tahiti, which is in French Polynesia and is a semi-autonomous territory of France.

When are the 2024 Olympics dates?

The Paris 2024 games are being held from 26 July to 11 August this year.

These dates fall within summer in Europe, so the athletes will be competing in warm climates.

Where to watch the 2024 Olympics in Australia

It’s been announced that fans will be able to watch the Olympic action unfold on the Nine Network. The games will be broadcast on over 40 free-to-air channels including Channel 9 and 9Now.

Additionally, Stan Sport will also be showcasing every single event from Paris 2024 ad-free, live and on-demand in 4K Ultra HD.

Numerous experts, including former athletes, will be commentating the events for Nine and Stan, with Ian Thorpe, Cate Campbell, Giaan Rooney, Ellie Cole, Steve Hooker, Cadel Evans, Ash Barty and more confirmed to be providing their specialist analysis on their respective sports.

Additionally, Westfield has been named as an official team partner of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic teams and all 37 venues across Australia will be transforming into official Live Sites for the games.

You can visit your local Westfield centre to watch live streams of key events, as well as enjoy Olympic themed events. Venues will be open for extended hours of the day to ensure fans can watch pinnacle matches and races live, even during the early hours of the morning.

Who is representing Australia in the 2024 Olympics?

Australia is gearing up to send more than 400 athletes to Paris for the 2024 Olympic Games.

Key teams who have qualified for the Olympics include the men’s and women’s basketball teams, the Matildas football team, both the men’s and women’s rugby sevens teams, the men’s and women’s water polo teams, and the men’s and women’s hockey teams, among many others.

In terms of individuals, the sport with the most athletes going to Paris so far is swimming, with 44 swimmers being named in the Olympic team.

Many stars have also qualified for the games in athletics, tennis, cycling, diving, and golf, as well as numerous other sports.

What time is the Olympic opening ceremony?

The Paris time zone is almost opposite for the majority of Australia.

The Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) zone is eight hours ahead, while the Australian Central Standard Time (ACST) zone is seven and a half hours ahead, and the Australian Western Standard Time (AWST) zone is ten hours ahead.

The Paris 2024 Olympic Games opening ceremony is set to take place at 8.24pm local time on Friday 26 July, which means it’ll be an early start for us in Australia.

The opening ceremony will occur at 2.24am in Western Australia (AWST), 3.54am in South Australia and the Northern Territory (ACST), and 4.24am in Queensland, New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory, Victoria, and Tasmania (AEST). 

The 2024 opening ceremony will be the largest-ever in Olympics history, and will also be the first opening ceremony held outside a stadium. Athletes will travel down the iconic Seine River on boats, and the riverbanks will be flooded with spectators cheering their teams on.
