Things have just become a little surreal for Robert Irwin. And that’s saying something for a guy who willingly hangs out with crocodiles.

The 20-year-old conservationist, passionate photographer and co-host of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! Australia is nominated for TV’s top gong, the coveted TV WEEK Gold Logie Award for Most Popular Personality On Australian Television. And he’s up for the Silver Logie for the Bert Newton Award for Most Popular Presenter too – not bad for his first real hosting gig on television.

(Credit: Yianni Aspradakis)

Just getting to the Logies will be an adventure for Robert, son of the late wildlife warrior Steve Irwin.

“I fly straight in from our crocodile- research expedition on Cape York [in far north Queensland],” Robert explains. “So, I’ll be neck-deep in mangrove mud catching 15-foot-long [4.5 metres] crocodiles. And then I get on a boat, cross a river in a four-wheel-drive and travel about 80 kilometres to a remote airport.

“A little plane flies me all the way down to Sydney and then I’m on the red carpet at the Logies.”

In the words of his dad, “Crikey!” But Robert takes it all in his stride.

“My life … has become the most enormous juxtaposition,” he says. “And doing something like this [he points to his suit covered in gold confetti at TV WEEK’s special photo shoot] is so different [to his everyday life], but I just really embrace it.”

Once he recovered from the shock of learning he was a nominee for the Gold Logie – “This is so meaningful and humbling,” he says of the honour – Robert told the rest of the Irwin gang back at Australia Zoo on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast: his mother Terri, sister Bindi and brother-in-law Chandler Powell. Their excitement was palpable.

And yet there was one reaction Robert wasn’t expecting.

“When I told my mum, she adopted a very serious tone and said, ‘I can’t imagine how proud your dad would be,’” he says. “And I wasn’t ready for that. She was like, ‘Whoa, that’s really powerful, because not even Dad got that recognition.’”

(Credit: Instagram)

While Steve was posthumously inducted into the Logie Hall of Fame in 2007 following his tragic death while diving in Queensland in 2006, he was never nominated for the Gold Logie. That fact is not lost on Robert, who grew up idolising his father and clearly does to this day.

Like his father, Robert has an unbridled, infectious enthusiasm for …well, everything. He is, in many ways, a croc-loving chip off the ol’ Irwin block.

“I feel my mum and dad taught me the most about having a passion – and then also having the dedication and persistence to spread that message to as many people as you can,” he says.

The young man talks of his famous father with great affection.

“The most passionate human being, multiply that by 10, and that was Dad,” Robert says. “He approached everything at a hundred per cent. If I can be half the person he was, I’ll be very, very happy. He was truly a superhero.

“And there was so much more to Dad than I think people realise. As a dad, he was just the most devoted human being. I lost him very young, but that passion he had it couldn’t help but take hold. All I can hope is that I’m doing him proud.”

Robert is aware of the significance of the Gold Logie nomination. It could mark a fork in the river. For the first time, he’s “forging his own path”.

“I’ve always been continuing his legacy, which is incredibly important to me,” Robert says of following in his father’s footsteps. “But now I get to continue that legacy and create my own. And for the first time, this feels like recognition of that. I can’t tell you how much that means to me.”

(Credti: Yianni Aspradakis)

Of course, the race for Gold also includes his I’m A Celebrity co-host Julia Morris, who he’s quick to praise (“What an honour to stand beside her”) and who he credits for guiding him through his first season of the reality show.

“I remember while filming, Julia and I were talking about comedy and she was saying, ‘Oh, your timing with this was really good,’” Robert recalls. “And I said, ‘Thanks, but comedy isn’t really what I do.’

“And she goes, ‘You’re hosting a comedy show now; you’re doing comedy. And I’m like, ‘I’m doing comedy – I can do that!’”

A high point for Robert while filming I’m A Celebrity was seeing someone like eventual 2024 winner Skye Wheatley overcome her fear of snakes.

(Credit: Yianni Aspradakis)

“She went into the viper room, surrounded by snakes, terrified,” he says. “By the end of it, she was asking to pick up one of the snakes. That’s exactly what I wanted to achieve with that show.”

The Irwins are no strangers to animal hijinks at the Logies. In 2018, a 14-year-old Robert managed to bring a python to the Logies red carpet. And who can forget when Steve brought a snake on stage at the 2003 Logies and it managed to nip presenter Tim Webster on the thigh?

Any ideas for this year, Robert?

“I’ve got an alligator named Sanchez,” he says excitedly. “I reckon I could get him on a plane and bring him to the Logies. Would that be OK?”

Sure, what could possibly go wrong?

The 64th TV WEEK Logie Awards will take place once more in Sydney on August 18, 2024.

Last year, Sonia Kruger took out top spot for the Gold Logie Award. While she has been nominated once more for the prestigious award, there are other fresh faces lining up to compete for the award.

The nominees for the 2024 Gold Logie include Andy Lee, Asher Keddie, Tony Armstrong, Julia Morris, Robert Irwin, Larry Emdur and Sonia Kruger.

Fans can now vote for their favourites from the nominees at tvweeklogies.com.au. As the votes roll in, TV WEEK chats with all seven nominees.

Getty

Larry Emdur

Larry wonders if his nomination for a Gold Logie might be a “prank”.

“I thought that hosting Celebrity Dog School automatically disqualified me from being nominated for any TV-related award ever,” the first-time nominee, 59, jokes to TV WEEK.

“It’s unlikely I’ll win and get to make a speech, so I’d like to take this opportunity to thank my wife Sylvie and my kids Jye and Tia for their love and support.”

Getty

Julia Morris

After being nominated for the top gong in 2022 and 2023, will it be third time lucky for Julia?

“It’s a great enough honour to still be on prime-time television at 56, but to be voted for the Gold alongside my wildlife warrior bestie Robert [Irwin] is the stuff dreams are made of,” the co-host of I’m A Celebrity tells TV WEEK. “Our jungle family will be euphoric.”

Getty

Robert Irwin

Conservationist Robert, son of the late Steve Irwin, is “honoured” to be nominated for a Gold Logie.

“My life is driven by a passion to make the world a better place, spread some positivity and advocate for our natural world,” the 20-year-old says.

“Stepping into a TV hosting role has been such an exciting new way to continue a legacy that’s so important to me. So, to be recognised by TV WEEK in this way is very meaningful personally – and for my mission.”

Getty

Tony Armstrong

Former AFL player Tony has been kicking plenty of goals since making the move from professional sport to TV presenting: in 2022 he won the Graham Kennedy Award For Most Popular New Talent, and in 2023 he won the Bert Newton Award For Most Popular Presenter.

Can the 34-year-old take out television’s top gong in 2024?

“What an honour,” Tony says of his nomination for the coveted award. “I also feel very out of my depth. Huge congrats to everyone nominated as well!”

Getty

Sonia Kruger

Sonia won her first Gold last year – and made headlines for taking a jab at fellow nominee Hamish Blake in her acceptance speech on the night. She’s now hoping to make it two wins from three nominations.

“One is random, two is a coincidence, three is a trend, people!” the 58-year-old tells TV WEEK.

“To be clear… I’m JOKING! I’m thrilled to be nominated again for the Gold Logie – and, given I flunked my speech last year, it’s no wonder I’ve been asked to repeat a grade.”

Getty

Andy Lee

This isn’t Andy’s first Logies rodeo. The presenter and comedian was nominated for Gold in 2015, alongside his long-time partner in comedy, Hamish Blake. Neither won that year, with the award going to Carrie Bickmore. Could this finally be Andy’s moment?

“Are you sure they haven’t confused me with Hamish?” Andy, 43, jokes to TV WEEK. “I’ll understand if they have – it happens all the time”.

Getty

Asher Keddie

Asher took home Gold in 2013 for her role as Dr Nina Proudman in Offspring. Can the actress do it again for playing Evelyn Jones in Strife?

“I’ve wholeheartedly enjoyed the work I’ve been doing over the past couple of years, so to be recognised this way and nominated for the Gold Logie is incredibly thrilling,” Asher, 49, says.

“I can’t wait to celebrate this achievement at TV’s night of nights in August.”

Television’s biggest night was full of laughter in 2023 with Sam Pang as host, and now the comedian will return to host the TV WEEK Logie Awards in 2024.

The 64th award ceremony will be once again held in Sydney, New South Wales on Sunday, August 18, 2024.

After Sam brought the crowd to tears with laughter during last year’s ceremony, we questioned who would be game enough to follow in his footsteps?

However, we just can’t get enough of Sam as he makes a grand return in for the 64th TV WEEK Logie Awards.

“Hosting the Logies last year was an amazing experience and I’m thrilled to return in 2024,” he said in a Seven announcement.

“Adding to the excitement Seven have also given me the greenlight to try new things this year so I’m really looking forward to displaying my underappreciated and severely undeveloped song and dance skills.”

(Image: Getty)

Speaking of his return, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Seven West Media, Jeff Howard said: “Sam Pang brought unabashed showbiz back to the Logies last year. He played a big part in the show drawing its biggest audience since 2017 and reaching more than 3.6 million on Channel 7 and 7plus.

“We are delighted Sam is returning in August to host this year’s celebration of everything television.”

The Logies will be returning to The Star Sydney for the special occasion, but there will be a slight tweak to the ceremony.

The judging panel has been expanded to allow a more diverse representation of Australia’s TV industry.

Plus, there have been alterations to 20 awards with “Most Popular” and “Most Outstanding” being changed to “Best.”

Additionally, a second news award has been added to the agenda.

However, three awards will remain as “Most Popular” including TV WEEK Gold Logie for Most Popular Personality on Australian Television, the Bert Newton Award for Most Popular Presenter and the Graham Kennedy Award for Most Popular New Talent.

Tony Armstrong’s Logies journey: From rookie to double winner https://www.nowtolove.com.au/entertainment/tv/tony-armstrong-logies-78390/ Sun, 30 Jul 2023 12:42:10 +0000 https://www.nowtolove.com.au/celebrity/tv/tony-armstrong-logies-78390 And he answers the big question...will he make it to work in the morning?

Tony Armstrong has won The Bert Newton Award for Most Popular Presenter at the 63rd TV WEEK Logie Awards.

This marks the second Logie Award the ABC Sports Presenter and former AFL player has won after winning the Graham Kennedy Award for Most Popular New Talent at the 2022 Logie Awards.

Last year, Tony’s Logie’s celebrations made headlines when he failed to show up to work the next morning/ ABC Queensland reporter Michael Rennie was tasked with tracking him down on the Gold Coast, finding him just before 7 am.

“Hey, guys, I can’t hear you back in the studio but thank you so much for all the support that you gave me along the way,” Tony told the show.

“A lot of people were after a rapid rise this morning but I couldn’t quite get up in the seven o’clock hour. But [I] managed to rapidly rise at eight and here we are.”

So is an early morning shift on the horizon following Tony’s most recent Logies win? Luckily not!

“Well, not now. I told, in no uncertain terms, my executive producer, that I would be very hard to find tomorrow,” he shared with TV WEEK shortly after his win.

WATCH: Tony Armstrong’s 2022 TV WEEK Logie Awards interview. Article continues below.

Despite his two Logies in two years, Tony is adamant he’s no “superstar” of Aussie TV.

“[I am] Absolutely not! I guess it is just a reflection of the great people that I work with mainly. Everyone at the ABC does such an amazing job and I’m just lucky that I get to be the person who amplifies all of their good work. I’m just super humbled by the award and by the Australian people voting.”

Always one to keep us on our toes, Tony also let slip the surprising place his Logie will live following the award show. Telling TV Week that one of his Logies will soon become a fixture at a Sydney pub.

“My mate owns the Lord Gladstone, he is my best mate, so one of the Logies is going to be a beer tap at the Lord Gladstone.”

In a moment of pure hilarity at the 63rd TV Week Logie Awards, host Sam Pang was roasted by Have You Been Paying Attention panellist Ed Kavalee after the comedy program won ‘Most Popular Comedy Program‘ for the fourth time.

Sam has been a regular panellist on the weeknight program, and real life friends with fellow comedian Ed.

Ed couldn’t help but poke fun at his colleague and friend Sam!

That of course didn’t stop Ed from poking fun at his missing Have You Been Paying Attention co host who whilst on stage with him, wasn’t accepting the award alongside him.

“Thank you so much,” Ed said to the crowd and the viewers watching from home before adding “and what about a massive hand for our missing colleague Sam Pang,” to which there was rapturous laughter through the room.

Ed then jested at Sam’s opening monologue telling him “the comments [on social media] are not going your way.”

“They didn’t like the submarine joke and you might want to block Kochie,” he added.

The crowd were in stitches!

Ed then went on to reveal that it was a pleasure being a part of Have You Been Paying Attention, especially considering how he worked with “five of the funniest people in Australia,” Sam of course being one of them.

The compliment however was short lived, Ed telling the audience that only “two” of the five were in the room at the Logies with him, including fellow award recipient and Have You Been Paying Attention host Tom Gleisner.

The 63rd TV WEEK Logie Awards have officially begun! Host Sam Pang kicked off television’s night of nights with a show-stopping opening monologue that delivered shock (and delight) to the A-list stars in the room.

Weeks before the big event, Sam promised TV WEEK that he was “ready to have some fun” with his opener. And as the first solo Logies host in 11 years, he certainly delivered.

Gold Logie nominee Sonia Kruger accurately predicted that he would bring some much-needed chaos to the glamorous event, telling TV WEEK she couldn’t wait to see what Sam would do.

“He’s going to nail this,” she said. “And in the process, I’m sure we’re all going to get stitched up and I’m looking forward to that. Because I think he’s very funny, and we need that element of danger that Sam brings.”

And boy, did Sam get dangerous with his witty quips and sharp one-liners. Scroll down to read the host’s full monologue.

Sam Pang is ready to host the 63rd TV WEEK Logie Awards.

Good evening everyone and welcome to Australian television’s night of nights. The 63rd TV Week Logies and for the first time since 2011, these words can be said – I am your host for the evening.

I would like to begin by acknowledge the Gadigal of the Eora Nation, the traditional custodians of this land, and pay my respects to the Elders both past and present. And I extend that respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples here today.

I would also like to acknowledge a win for diversity tonight. I am the first host in the history of the Logies to be half and half – half Channel 7 and half Channel 10.

Let’s be honest it just be great to have an Asian on Channel 7 who isn’t trying to smuggle live birds through border security.

Let’s be honest it just be great to have an Asian on Channel 7 who isn’t trying to smuggle live birds through border security.

Tonight we gather to celebrate excellence in Australian television. It is a long night but I will be doing my best to keep things moving, and there is one thing I can guarantee and that is over the next two days we are going to have a lot of fun, ladies and gentlemen. To the viewers at home, firstly, if you are under 25, welcome to free-to-air television.

It is a huge honour to be your guide tonight, but let’s just address the elephant in the room. Everyone watching at home and everyone in this room know that I was not Channel 7’s first choice to host tonight. So let’s go through the list of people that Channel 7 asked.

The Have You Been Paying Attention? panelist took fire at some of Australia’s biggest stars.

So Hamish Blake said no. Thank you, Hamish, I really appreciate it, mate, some of us have appreciate it, mate, some of us have a mortgage. By the way, a mortgage is when the bank loans… Don’t worry about it.

Julia Morris said no. Tom Gleeson said no. Kitty Flanagan said no. Mick Molloy said yes. And Chen Channel 7 lawyers said no. Shaun Micallef said no. Celia Pacquola said no. Shane Jacobson said yes before knowing what the question was.. Karl Stefanovic said yes, as long the show was held in a park in Noosa.

Dave Hughes said no, Sonia Kruger said no and eventually it came down to two, and then Rolf Harris died so here I am.

After being held on the Gold Coast for the last few years the Logies return to Sydney. Many people won’t know this but we had to make the move but the last year on the Gold Coast Tom Gleeson went outside during the day and caught on fire.

Tonight we celebrate the best of Australian television and what a year it has been. Heartbreak High number one on Netflix. Well, tonight is long, by the end of it you might be mature age students. But what are year, Mad as Hell, Fisk, Bluey has taken America by storm. Mystery Road: Origin, The Twelve, Colin from Accounts.

The standard of this country’s television is something we can all be very proud of ladies and gentlemen. And then there was Married at First Sight.

The host had the audience in stitches of laughter.

Which continued to be a ratings juggernaut in yet another clear sign that we may not make it as a species. Each week the show had a different theme. We had honesty week. Intimacy week. Here is a week I would watch – literacy week.

Actually, you know what that might have been a bit mean so for all of the Married at First Sight contestants sitting here on table 50. On behalf of everyone here tonight, I would like to welcome you tonight, I would like to welcome you to your last ever Logies.

Up for the most popular entertainment program is The Voice, despite Peter Dutton’s strong opposition to the nomination. The Block and Scotty Cam are nominated again for most popular reality program. Well done Scotty. The Block shows Australians what it is like to own their own home, making it the greatest fantasy series since Game of Thrones.

This year’s theme is the 1950s and I’m personally looking forward to the long-awaited return of led paint and asbestos to our screens. Nominated in the same category is I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!. A wonderful show where we find out which Australian celebrities haven’t been adding to their super. Hey Kerri-Anne [Kennerley], how are you?

The Bachelor returned for its tenth season, well done Osher. This year we had three bachelors because of course when women are isolated from their family and friends what could make them feel safer than more men.

Alone on SBS is nominated for most outstanding factual or documentary program. Well done to everyone there at my old station for taking a huge risk on a show that doesn’t feature hit remember, breasts or Scottish locomotives. — Hitler, breasts or Scottish locomotives. Bold programs.

Pang’s fellow hosts also lended a hand.

Survivor was better than ever over on Channel 10 and is nominated for Most Outstanding Reality Program. The challenges on Survivor get upper and tougher every year. This season the contestants were asked to name other shows they recognise the host Jonathan LaPaglia from. That was just for me. If you wanted slick you should have got Sonia Kruger and the vet.

Both Hamish and Andy were here to tonight. Hamish won the Gold Logie last year for the second time and is nominated again this year, and Andy… is mates with Hamish. No, not only does he know Hamish, he is the host of The Hundred With Andy Lee; a very, very funny show that sees my friend Andy trying his hardest to interact with ordinary people. How you’re not nominated for Best Actor, mate, I’ll never know.

LEGO Masters is up for most popular and most outstanding entertainment program. Congratulations. And the most recent season of LEGO Masters saw contestants take on their biggest challenge yet – building social connections and interacting with other human beings. And a win tonight would cement LEGO Masters‘ as Australia’s premier entertainment show and also provide some comfort after the unfortunate episode where five contestants were lost in a LEGO submarine challenge.. Just relax, Hamish and BricKman weren’t on board.

A big year of farewell, Tracy Grimshaw, Carrie Bickmore, Leigh Sales, Shaun Micallef and of course David Koch. Kochie retired after 21 years on Sunrise, well done. There is no doubt that you changed breakfast television forever. Warmth, humour, personality, you needed none of those.

What a marvel you are sir, well done. The world of television moves on quickly. Kochie is only here tonight because he is Emporium’s plus one. And what would a Logies be without Karl Stefanovic, hey. Where is he? There he is on the Today Show table. Can’t quite… Sitting next to your co-host, who do you have this year, Karl?

No, of course, it is the highly respected journalist Sarah Abo who has gone from… Yes, congratulations, Sarah. Who has gone from comment comment where she covered the Russia Ukraine war and the conflict in Syria to the Today Show, where her biggest story so far has been covering the Gympie potato festival. That is a fun table, one to look out for tonight, it would be even more fun if Michael Clarke was on it, I tell you, Karl.

As we all know, the biggest award tonight is the Gold Logie and congratulations to the seven nominees, ladies and gentlemen. Let’s list them, let’s give them their moment. Hamish Blake is there, well done Hamish. The one and only Shaun Micallef nominated for the first time. Leigh Sales also nominated. Sonia Kruger. There you are. An amazing actor, Mark Coles Smith, nominated for Gold. Osher Gunsberg is up for Gold this year, and Julia Morris.

The ‘magnificent 7 and they couldn’t be more deserving. Two of them, Leigh Sales and Shaun Micallef were so good this year they aren’t even on television any more. I would also like to address some rumours that have been circulating about myself and Julia Morris.

Just relax, I love Julia. Well, things aren’t great at home. No, the story was that I may be joining her as the co-host of I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! and I would like to put that to rest, that won’t be happening. As much as I love Julia, I think the last thing Australians who fought for this country want to see when they turn on the television is an Asian emerging from the jungle.

The TV WEEK Logie Awards have been around for as long as we can remember (or 62 years to be exact), but the reason behind the name of television’s night of nights remains relatively unknown among Aussies.

With its hallmark razzmatazz and anything-can-happen excitement, the annual TV WEEK Logie Awards celebrate Australia’s spectacular TV industry, recognising talent across entertainment, drama, comedy, reality, lifestyle, current affairs and sport.

While the awards are a household name, the ceremony was originally named the TV WEEK Awards but in 1960 – a year after its inception – the name was changed to be the TV WEEK Logie Awards.

It was iconic Aussie entertainer Graham Kennedy who suggested they be named ‘The Logies’ in honour of John Logie Baird, a Scottish engineer who helped invent the television in 1926.

Graham’s influence and impact on the Logies extends far beyond his coining of the name.

In 2006, the Graham Kennedy Award for New Talent was introduced to recognise Australia’s newest stars who have made their mark in the entertainment industry.

The 2022 nominees are Home and Away‘s Matt Evans, Married At First Sight expert and sexologist Alessandra Rampolla, The Project presenter Tony Armstrong, comedian Melanie Bracewell, Bump‘s Carlos Sanson Jr and Love Me actor Will Lodder.

After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the TV WEEK Logie Awards will return to the Gold Coast on Sunday, June 19.

This year the inaugural Bert Newton Award for Most Popular Presenter will be introduced.

Bert Newton was the ultimate Australian TV presenter and entertainer; a Logies Hall of Fame inductee, winner of four Gold Logie Awards and the host of TV’s most prestigious night 20 times.

“We are so thrilled Bert is being recognised this way and will be part of the Logies every year moving forward. It was such a big part of his career and he just loved it, so I know he would be pretty pleased with this honour,” Bert’s wife Patti said.
